Event 11: for the second week in a row heavy rains early in the day diminished the field for the Monday Night race but racers that showed up were treated to sunny skies and dry roads. This week we were lucky to welcome a number of young newcomers to the Midweek Novice Race Series. This series is probably one of the smoothest ways for newcomers to enter into the oftentimes difficult to penetrate sport of road racing. This week's race saw freqent Monday night animator Shane Ferreira of Madonna Wheelers finally crack the top spot after numerous attempts in the past weeks. Shane failed in his numerous attempts to break the field apart but did conserve his strength to take the finishing sprint. Madonna teamate Steve Hamilton came in second and Cyclepath Newmarket's Master Gord Avann rounded out the top three.
Announcement: Madonna Wheelers will be having their annual criterium Sunday Aug. 26, 2001. The event is open to all novices, masters, Sr3 and women. Check midweek.wox.org for details or e-mail: steve.hamilton@home.com.
Thanks to rider coach Pierre Perrin and to Peter McCaffery for help with putting on the race and to the riders and volunteers for helping set up and take down the course and acting as lap counters course sweepers and bell-ringers.
Thanks to Sponsors La Bicicletta and Schwinn Canada for prizes and continued support.
**Note: The will be NO NOVICE RACE August 6th and Aug 13th.
