GP Feminin Attracts Lyne Bessette and Genevieve Jeanson

Cowansville August 15th 2001 - The 5th edition of the Grand Prix féminin international du Québec will be held in the Brome-Missisquoi region from August 22nd to August 26th. Fifteen teams, including several international top teams from Canada, United States, France, Netherlands and Great Britain, will compete in this six stage race for $25,000 in prize money. "Having a pack of 90 riders indicates that this event has a good reputation outside Canada. Top teams from Canada, Great Britain and United States (seven teams) will be back this year. It's going to be the best race because a lot of top cyclists can cotend for the overall title, even up to the last stage with the Mont Sutton ascent" said race president Jean Lessard.

In addition to Lyne Bessette from Team Saturn and Geneviève Jeanson from Rona, several other top cyclists will focus on the overall title: Finnish World Cup winner Pia Sundstedt from Intersport; Sara Symington (gold jersey on the early stages in 2000) and Nicole Cooke (2000 world junior champion) from Team Great Britain, and the German sprinting ace Petra Rossner from Team Saturn. " Anything can happen on a stage race; we could be surprised " said Lessard.

The stage race will be suited for all types of riders with races for climbers, sprinters and time trial specialists. In all, 470 kilometers in five days will be completed, including four road races held on August 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 26th; one time trial and one criterium held the same day on August 25th. The following municipalities will host one of the races: Farnham (97 km), Frelighsburg (123,5 km), Richford in Vermont to Knowlton (99 km), Bedford (19 km time trial), Cowansville (40 km criterium) and Sutton (90 km). The climb of Jay Peak (11 km up to an elevation of 800 meters) in the US stage will give a lot of difficulties to the riders, which they called the "monkey face climb". It describes how athletes suffer in this ascent !


Hamilton CC Tuesday Night Crit Series

August 14th, 2001

So far we've had a total of 122 participants in the Hamilton Cycling Club's Tuesday Night Criterium Training Ride. The ride consists of 36 laps of the course, which totals about 40 kilometres, and the registration fee is $2.00 per week. It's great training, hot competition and fun, too . . . and we always go to Tim Horton's after. Come on out and join us!

Tonight (August 14th), we had a record 53 riders! It was an exciting race to watch with a VERY close finish!

1. With 24 laps to go, we awarded a $5.00 prime to PIERS DAVIDGE.

2. With 12 laps to go, we awarded a 3-point prime which was won by also won by PEIRS DAVIDGE.
