Brockton Criterium in Stanley Park - B.C.

The inaugural Brockton Criterium is now in the books, showing a clear win for local favourite and all round nice guy, Andreas Hestler. Set in Vancouver's Stanley Park, the first time around the block for this race proved to be a qualified success with in excess of 60 participants. In light of the lateness of the event (Sept. 29th), 60 riders met the organizers baseline for success and will provide the springboard for a larger event closer to mid season in 2002 .

Stanley Park is a fabulous location for a bike race. It is very close to downtown so easy to access, and provides both an exciting array of route options as well as the fabulous backdrop of the west coast mountains and the downtown towers. The points race format kept the pace high and the spectators involved, while the rolling course offered great visibility and the opportunity to see the racers for over half the circuit from many places.

This year's event was something of a trial balloon, and we're pleased to say that it soared higher than expected. With this year's success, and with the backing of Vancouver's Parks Board, expect to see the Brockton Criterium in future years be a significant event in B.C.'s racing calendar.

The Cycling BC AGM will be held in Vancouver on October 14, 2001. The meeting will begin at 10 am in room 106 of the Sport BC Building. Agenda items will include but are not limited to: the approval of the 2002 membership fees and 2000 audited financial statements, as well as Board elections for the position of President, VP Off-Road Racing and VP Randonneur.

Race Registration
Registration is $35.00 for all categories (except Junior Category where registration is $25.00).

Registration and package pick-up continues at Pedalhead Bicycle Works on Friday, November 2 from 10am-6pm and those pre-registered may pick up race packages on Saturday, November 3 from 10am to 4pm.

Registration will be accepted until 6pm Friday, November 2nd. Race day entry is not permitted.

Awards Ceremony
Ceremony to commence at 3:30p.m. at the start/finish line, with the Goldstick clubhouse as the alternative for inclement weather. Top 3 finishers are required to attend to claim prizes.

Bacardi Canada is sponsoring $1000 cash prize to the winner of the Men's Elite category. There will also be cash prizes for some medal positions.

Draw prizes include a Lemond Poprad bicycle and a set of Mavic Cosmos wheels plus tonnes of other great prizes.

National Champion jersey is awarded to all categories that meet the following minimum participation criteria:
1. Minimum of three (3) provinces represented in category finishers
2. Minimum of five (5) athletes finishing the category

Medals are awarded to all categories with the following minimum participation criteria:
1. Gold, silver and bronze medal with a minimum of four (4) finishers.
2. Gold and silver medal with a minimum of three (3) finishers.
3. Gold medal with only two (2) finishers.

Facilities
The race course is set at the scenic Goldstick Park, 15min. east of downtown Edmonton (4210-101Ave). The park hosts some of Edmonton's most scenic cross-country trials and is close to restaurants and gas stations. Tiger Goldstick Park facilities include a clubhouse with restrooms, showers, and a meeting room. This is the site for sign-on, media coordination and drug testing. The park's paved lot can hold up to 100 cars. If your club/organization has any special parking requirements (ie. large vehicles) please contact race organizer in advance.

Accommodations
The Varscona Hotel located at, 8208-106 Street, is the official hotel for the 2001 Canadian National Cyclocross Championships. The hotel will also be the site for CCA meetings and the ABA's Annual General Meeting. The Varscona Hotel is in the heart of Old Strathcona with plenty of fine shops and restaurants for your enjoyment. The hotel is 25km from the International Airport, 8km from the race course and 7 blocks from Pedalhead Bicycle Works.

For reservations call the Varscona Hotel at 780-434-6111 and indicate that you are participating in the Canadian National Cyclocross Championships. An airport shuttle is available.


Technical Details

Licences & Eligibility
All participants must be in possession of a valid CCA/UCI international licence. Road and Mountain Bike category designations will both be accepted for this event. Domestic licences from within Canada or from other countries will not be permitted.

The event is open to participants from other countries, however, only a Canadian Citizen may hold a National title. (See the 2001 CCA Regulations for specific information concerning citizenship, eligibility, and National titles).

Licences must be presented to the commissaire during race kit pick up, and at any other time deemed necessary during the competition.

No one-event licences will be sold.

Race Categories
The categories for nationals are as follows based on rider's age on December 31, 2001:

MEN
Elite: This category shall comprise of riders 23 years and above.
Under 23 (Espoir): This category shall comprise of riders 19-22years old. A rider of this age belonging to a Trade Team shall be qualified as Elite.
Juniors: This category shall comprise of riders 17 and 18 years old.
Masters: This category shall comprise of riders 30 years and above who elect this status. The choice of Maters shall not be open to a rider belonging to a Trade Team. Masters 30-39, Masters 40-49, Masters 50-59 and Masters 60+.

WOMEN
Elite: This category shall comprise of riders 19 years and above.
Juniors: This category shall comprise of riders 17 and 18 years olds.
Masters: This category shall comprise of all riders 30 years and above who elect this status.

Race numbers are to be worn according to the attached diagram. Race numbers may not be folded or otherwise altered.

Rider category may be identified according to the following numbering schedule:

Junior Men #150-200
Espoir #201-229

Race start
Riders must report to staging no less than 15minutes before posted start time for roll call and staging. Racers will be seeded.

Course
The 2.8km course begins on a fast stretch of shale track. Winding into a grassy section, a fast descent is followed by a quick short climb. The next section of undulating terrain is fast and fun ending with a steep hill run. At the top of the hill, a stretch of pavement takes the riders back to the start/finish with a double forced dismount. Attached map provides detailed layout of course.

Equipment
All Elite Men, Elite Women, and Espoir Men, are required to compete with bicycles that meet the specific cyclo-cross configuration requirements, as detailed in the 2001 CCA/UCI Regulations. All other categories will have the flexibility to use mountain bikes or bicycles with alternative configurations.

Mechanical Support
Two service pits are located along the course. Pit A is located just after the start/finish and is for wheels only. Pit B is on the far side of the field and is for bikes only. No other point on the course may be used to effect wheel or bike changes respectively.
