Changes toWorld Track Championships
Starting in 2003, the World Track Championships will be held at the end of August or the beginning of September. The UCI made this decision on Monday prior to start of the World Championships in Lisbon. The date change is to accommodate the addition of an Espoir category for riders aged between 19 and 23.
The dates of the Track World Cup be between January and May. Sydney, Mexico City, Moscow and Cali will host rounds of the World Cup next season.
A women's Keirin race will be added
A men's scratch race will be added
The rules of the Points Race will be changed so that gaining a lap will be awarded points
The 2004 World's venue decision has been delayed until February.
2004 Road Worlds to be in Verona Italy
The Italian city of Verona will again play host to the World Road Championships. Verona last hosted the Worlds's in 1999.
The bid system for World Championships will change in the future. Venues wishing to host World Championships will be shortlisted (in a similar fashion to the Olympic bid system).
Changes to MTB for 2002
The dual (as we know it) will cease to exist and will be replaced with a 4 person event, similar to biker cross.
The time trial will be eliminated.
Medical monitoring (hemocrit testing) will now take place throughout the season at major races. In 2001 the World Championships was the only event that the UCI performed the test in MTB.
The 2004 World's venue decision has been delayed until February. The (unofficial) reason given is to (hopefully) have a venue closer to Athens, Greece, site of the 2004 Olympics.
