Two Canadians Elected to UCI Commissions

The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) would like to congratulate Mr. Brian Jolly, President of the CCA. At the UCI (International Cycling Union) congress in Lisbon this month, Brian was appointed to the UCI Road Commission. Brian is one of four members of this prestigious Commission, and his appointment is for a four year term.

The CCA also congratulates Mr. Pierre Blanchard, International Road and Mountain Bike Commissaire, who was appointed to the UCI Mountain Bike Commission, for a four year term. This Commission is now chaired by Mr. Daniel Baal who has just taken over from Canada's Mr. Marc Lemay.

The importance of these nominations is amplified by the fact that the UCI has significantly reduced it's Commission structure, resulting in many more countries lobbying for positions.

Also at the UCI congress in Lisbon, Marc Lemay received the prestigious UCI Merit. The award recognizes an individual's contribution to the development of cycling at the international level. Marc's term as UCI Mountain Bike Commission President is over as of October 2001. The recent Mountain Bike World Championships in Vail, where Canada won 4 medals (2 gold and 2 silver) was a crowning moment for Mr. Lemay as he presented Roland Green with the Elite men's World Champion jersey. We have not heard the last of Mr. Lemay, as he will always remain an ambassador for Canadian cycling.

L'Association cycliste canadienne (ACC) félicite M. Brian Jolly, Président de l'ACC. Au congrés de l'UCI (Union cycliste internationale) ce mois a Lisbonne, Brian a été nommé à la Commission de Route de l'UCI, pour une durée de quatre année.

L'ACC félicite aussi M. Pierre Blanchard, Commissaire Internationale de Route et Vélo de montagne, qui a été nommé à la Commission de Vélo de Montagne de l'UCI pour un terme de quatre année. Cette Commission est maintenant dirigé par M. Daniel Baal, qui vient de remplacer M. Marc Lemay du Canada.

L'importance de ces nominations est amplifiées du fait que l'UCI a réduit significativement le nombre de ses Commissions. Les positions disponibles étaient très convoitées.

Aussi au congrès de l'UCI, Marc Lemay a reçu le Mérite UCI. Ce mérite prestigieuse reconnais la contribution d'un individu au dévelopement du cyclisme internationale. Son terme comme Président de la Commission de Vélo de Montagne de l'UCI se termine en octobre, 2001. Les Championnats du Monde de Vélo de Montagne à Vail, où le Canada a remporté 4 médailles (2 or et 2 argent) était un moment suprême pour M. Lemay car il a présenté à Roland Green le maillot Champion du Monde Elite. M. Lemay restera toujour un ambassadeur pour le cyclisme Canadien.

Good News. The southern Ontario cyclo-cross events have become an OCA - approved series. Standings in will be based on each rider's best five results. Results from the first four sanctioned events may be counted for total points along with results from the remaining five events, including the provincial championships. Categories for this series are: senior men, master A, Master B,C,D, women, junior/cadet. Series medals or plaques will be awarded, depending on total number of riders in a category. There will also be overall winners' trophies for the top performers in the master A/senior group and the master BCD/women/junior/cadet group.

Hilton Haunted Ride, Hilton Falls Conservation Area (Ontario) October 27

If you checked the W.O.W. web site recently you probably read that due to a whole bunch of financial issues regarding insurance we ended up cancelling the Haunted Night Race and Tour as of last week. Seems the insurance company considers mountain biking to be somewhere between drag racing and shark wrestling as far as risk so they are charging OCUP rates even for small events. We just can't make it fly.

All is not lost if you want to do a Night Ride! Hilton Falls Conservation Area will be open on Saturday Night October 27th for mountain biking. Sorry, no race, just open for riding. W.O.W. will be there volunteering our services. We will lead a tour of the property for an hour or more starting at 7pm. There will even be some Halloween treats when we get back. The gate opens at 6pm and closes at 7pm (security for your vehicles) so don't be late. We will be out of the park by 10pm. After that probably over to the local Kelsey's for some carbonated grain based beverage. The usual $3.50 gate fee applies and season passes will be honoured. Where else can you have this much fun for so few bucks?!? Hope to see you there.

Taylor Hollstedt has announced the formation of the Canmore BMX Club with an executive in place and legal formation to be completed in the next two weeks. They plan to break ground in early spring.
