As you can see, the Men's race came down to a four man sprint, and as such Andreas was unable to take the time back that he needed to finish third. The group of seven at the front broke apart slightly in the last few miles of the race when Chris couldn't maintain the pace. After the race, Andreas told of his attempts to attack the bunch on more than one occasion in the waning minutes, but could not lose the other riders. He required a five second margin over Malmsten to move into third.

Honestly I don't know the story behind the women's race as it was going on right before the men were to start. The weather the night before had made the course a little more slick than the usual hardpacked conditions. The course was not too bad for the mens race but the earlier categories had to contend with considerably muddier conditions, and this might have also been the case for much of the women's event.
