USOC Annual Honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Cyclist Lance Armstrong, tennis player Jennifer Capriati and Cycling's U.S. Postal Service Team have been voted the 2001 USOC SportsMan, SportsWoman and Sports Team of the Year , respectively.
The USOC SportsMan and SportsWoman of the Year awards have been presented annually since 1974 to the top overall male and female athlete from within the USOC member organizations. The team award was added in 1996. Voters for the awards include national media, the USOC Executive Committee, the USOC Board of Directors and the USOC Athletes' Advisory Council. Winners are selected from the individual female and male Athlete of the Year and Team of the Year honorees of the National Governing Bodies for the Olympic, Pan American, Affiliated and Disabled Sports Organizations within the U.S. Olympic Movement.
Armstrong (Austin, Texas) won his third consecutive Tour de France in 2001, the first U.S. rider to achieve the Tours triple (fifth overall). On the way to his victory in Paris, the cyclist won four Tour de France stages. Armstrong also finished in first place at the Tour de Suisse, was second in the Amstel Gold Race (Netherlands) and eighth in the Semana Catalana (Spain). He was fourth in the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World road ranking. Armstrong was previously honored by the USOC as its 1999 SportsMan of the Year.
Capriati (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) won her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, defeating Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final, respectively. She won the second leg of the Grand Slam by capturing the women's singles title at the French Open, becoming the first American woman to win the French title since Chris Evert in 1986. Capriati is one of only four women in tennis history to win the Australian Open and French Open in the same year. When Capriati advanced to #1 in the Sanex WTA Tour rankings, she became only the sixth American woman to hold the top spot since WTA Tour computer rankings began in 1975.
The U.S. Postal Service Team was honored for successfully defending the Tour de France yellow jersey in 2001 for the third consecutive year. Team members are Lance Armstrong; Dylan Casey/Walnut Creek, Calif.; Antonio Cruz/Whittier, Calif.; Tyler Hamilton/Marblehead, Mass.; George Hincapie/Charlotte, N.C.; Kenny Labbe/Mount Prospect, Ill.; Levi Leipheimer/Butte, Mont.; Christian Vande Velde/Lemont, Ill.; Robbie Ventura/Kenosha, Wis.; and David Zabriskie/Salt Lake City, Utah. Among the cyclists other achievements was earning second overall in the Vuelta a Espana and fifth overall in the Tour de Suisse.
Telluride 360 Adventure Festival
TELLURIDE, Colo. (Jan. 21, 2001) ˆCycling's international governing body has confirmed that a Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Downhill and 4X will be part of the inaugural Telluride 360 Adventure Festival. A major cross country race will also draw the world's best mountain bike talent to the Rocky Mountains for this 10-day festival slated for July 9-18, 2002.
"We're thankful that the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) put us on the calendar for our inaugural year," said Rick Sutton, one of the event's organizers. "We're flattered that they show that much confidence in our abilities."
The initial world cup calendar had an event in Arai, Japan. When organizers there cancelled, Sutton immediately petitioned USA Cycling and the UCI for World Cup status at Telluride.
The mountain bike racing will be one of several strands of outdoor sports braided together to make the Telluride 360 a strong event for both participants and spectators. A focal point of the 10-day event will be Primal Quest, the world's richest expedition adventure race boasting a prize list of $250,000. Primal Quest will pit four-person teams against the San Juan Mountains, where they will run, ride, paddle, climb and navigate their ways along a 300-plus mile course. The winning team, which must finish with all four members together, will take home more than $100,000.
With those athletes departing on July 7, the Rocky Mountain hamlet of Telluride and its nearby Mountain Village, will then brace for the start of the Telluride 360 Adventure Festival, a modern celebration of outdoor activities akin to the Mountain Men's Rendezvous of the early 19th Century. The five-day festival will welcome outdoor lovers of all stripes, with mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, trail running, fly fishing, adventure racing and a little bit of rock 'n' roll. The activities surrounding a huge sports expo, will offer something for everyone, especially active families.
Happy Birthday To...
Eric Cseff (January 22nd).
