UCI Finalizes World Cup Schedule
The UCI has finalized the Mountain Bike World Cup schedule, after months of uncertainty. There will be 6 Downhill/4-Cross events, but only 5 cross-country races - thelowest number ever.
The schedule was first thrown into confusion when Arai, Japan (DH / 4-Cross) and Leysin, Switzerland (XC / DH / 4-Cross) were cancelled. After much hemming and hawing, Fort Williams, Scotland and Telluride, Colorado were added for Downhill and 4-Cross. However, nothing was added for cross-country, despite Telluride organizer Galeforce and Canadian organizer Gestev (to do the race at Lake Placid) both offering to do the event.
The problem is that after the UCI cancelled Leysin, a number of European cross-country events were scheduled. If a cross-country race was added, it would conflict with thtese events. So, the decision was made to drop the 6th event. There are clear reasons for doing this, but it sets a very bad precedent when teams are going looking for sponsors. Sponsoring a team for a 5 race series is a harder sell.

| September 7-8 | World Cup XC No. 5, DH/4-X No. 6 | Les Gets, France |
Canada remains the only country with 2 events in each discipline.
Paris-Nice Cancelled
One of the early season classic stage races, Paris-Nice, has been cancelled for 2002. Former Tour winner Laurent Fignon, owner of the race,and the owners of the Tour de France (who had offered to purchase the Paris-Nice from Fignon) could not come to terms. The race was scheduled to take place March 10-17. Fignon syas that he will have new financing in place by 2003.
