Canada's Top Mountain Bikers Attend Benefit Camps

Victoria (Feb. 12, 2002) - For the past five years, some the world's top mountain bikers have shared their expertise with up and coming BC high school mountain bikers at an annual fall camp. Now they're giving back to a larger cycling community, and it's more than the young participants who will benefit.

World Champion Roland Green (Trek/Volkswagen), his gold-medal relay teammates Chrissy Redden (Gary Fisher/Subaru) and Ryder Hesjedal (Gary Fisher/Subaru) and World Silver Medallist Alison Sydor (Trek/Volkswagen) are a few of the top names joining their professional teams and offering their services at the Nike Cycling Development Camp in Beaverton, Oregon February 15-17.

Net proceeds from the weekend's events will benefit two non-profit organizations closely connected with the cycling communities in the USA:

B.I.K.E. - Bicycles and Ideas for Kids Empowerment - an organization aimed at facilitating the development of values and life skills essential for productive citizenship in inner-city youth through bicycling, tutoring, year-round mentoring, and leadership training; and Lance Armstrong Foundation, helping people manage and survive cancer.

In addition to a weekend of workshops and clinics for pre-registered cyclists aged 10 years and older, the athletes will mingle with the crowd at a Legends of Cycling Benefit Reception and will ride with cycling enthusiasts in a Legends of Cycling Benefit Ride.

These and other PacificSport National Cycling Centre athletes will again be volunteering their time to the sixth annual BC Championship Invitational High School Camp, presented by the Pacific Sport/Sprockids Program Development Society later this fall. Last year more than 65 young riders, the top in their categories at the BC High School Mountain Bike Championships, were invited to the camp. Each year there are athletes identified at this camp that have gone on to make the Junior World Mountain Biking Team.
