March 20 -22 La Ronde de Aquitaine Stage Race - France

A large field of Europeon riders (90) including Jeannie Longo, and Julie Young, (formerly of Saturn and now riding for an Italian team). This race was a National French race so it also included the French National Team. The race consisted of an opening day 7 K TT, including a 1K cobbled climb, an 80 km RR on Saturday, and another 85K RR on Sunday.

Canadian Heather Cole finished 25th in the TT, about 20 seconds down on second, as Jeannie Longo was almost one minute faster than the rest of the riders. Saturday, saw a very windy day, on a rolling course. Heather was with the front group until the last lap, and got caught in the cross winds, finishing about 1:30 down. The Sunday race included a 3K cobbled climb,that had to be ridden 6 times. The pack split within 5K of the start. There were constant attacks,and the lead group finished the stage with about 30 women, with Heather having a good ride, and finishing 8th. Overall, she ended up finishing 20th. Julie Young was the overall winner.

The Cobourg Cycling Club and Jet Fuel are hosting the Easter Sunday Criteriums being held April 12, 1998 at the Diamond Industrial Mall, Willmott St. Cobourg, Ontario. Categories include Junior; Vets (A,B,C,D); Senior 3; and Senior 1,2. Coming Up

This weekend promises to be quite busy - a Women‚s World Cup road race in Australia, and the first Mountain Bike World Cup in Napa, California. We will (as always) be providing coverage of each and, if the technology works out, will be getting telephone interviews from Australia moments after the race!
