Mountain Bike Nationals to Double as Replacement for Canada Cup Event
Courtesy CCA
Last week the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) received word that Silver Star Mtn. would have to withdraw from their commitment to host Canada Cup cross-country # 5 and downhill # 4.
With the unfortunate cancellation of the UCI World Cup MTB event at Grouse Mtn.still a recent memory for many riders, there was a clear need for the CCA to react quickly and to investigate several alternative options.
The CCA Development Committee established two primary objectives. First, to maintain the total number of series events originally planned for 2002; and second, to select an option that would have the lowest impact to riders in terms of travel and cost considerations.
The committee explored the possibility of maintaining the intended event date at another venue in British Columbia, however, it became evident that this was not a viable option give the short time frame. In the final analysis, after receiving input from a number of athletes and having exhausted all reasonable alternatives, the best solution was obvious.
The points for Canada Cup cross-country # 5 and downhill # 4 will be allocated based on the results for the National Championship events. The Tim Hortons MTB National Championships will take place at Sun Peaks Resort - near Kamloops, BC - July 19-21, 2002.
