Gord Fraser Wins in Atlanta

US10K Classic - 100kms

Mercury's Gord Fraser showed no ill effects of his recent crash at the USPRO Championships Sunday, as he took the victory in the 3rd day of the US 10K event held in Atlanta. Fraser who has been off the bike for most of the last 3 weeks, struggle a bit on Saturday night finishing 5th in the Criterium.

Mercury was up early Monday morning to contest the last and biggest of the three day events. The US10K Classic is the richest race in the Southeast, with $30,000 up for grabs. It also has one of the fastest finishes, placed at the bottom of a hill, where riders could reach speeds in excess of 55mph in the sprint, a bit on the crazy side.

The course sent the riders through the streets of Marietta, where they faced an 11 loop circuit, before heading towards the downhill finish. Around the 5th lap, a strong group broke away, containing some 15 riders, with each of the strong teams represented. Mercury had Fraser and Moninger and the group also included Alex Candelario, (Prime Alliance), and Mariano Friedick (Jelly Belly). The group's lead kept increasing by every lap and with 3 circuits to go, the main peloton was some five minutes behind, with a smaller group caught in no man's land.

With two plus hours on the saddle, the front group appeared at the top of the hill and the mad dash for the finish began. In what was a very tight sprint, Gord Fraser (Mercury) took first place, ahead of Mariano Friedick (Jelly Belly) and Siro Camponogara (Navigators). A few minutes went by until the results were official, because a protest was filed, but the referees studied the tape and decided it was a clean finish.
