On Wednesday September 4th the Burnaby Velodrome reopened for the first time since being closed down May 7, 2001. The media event and reopening was a huge success with press on hand from over half a dozen electronic and print crews. CITY TV‚s reporter even did part of his piece while riding the track after some quick tutelage from a Burnaby Velodrome Club coach.
Among those on hand were National Team member and World Cup winner Mandy Poitras, 2002 national silver medallist ( sprint ) Keith Bruneau, and National Jr. Champion Marsh Cooper. After the media event and press conference the track was open for former and new members to try out the track. Participation was great with over seventeen new people giving the track a try for the first time including Volleyball BC‚s, Brian Forrester who manages the facility. Also on hand were invited dignitaries from the lower mainland Olympic Games 2010 bid group who were duly impressed with the facility and wished the Burnaby Velodrome Club continued success. All totaled over fifty people rode on the velodrome for the opening night with many new members signing up on the spot.
Along with the new format proposed in running the velodrome the Burnaby Velodrome is pleased to announce that Rudy Project Eyewear has agreed to a significant product sponsorship of BVC programs for the remainder of 2002 and all of 2003. This is an exciting step only one day after the grand re-opening.
