The Phoenix Velo Training Group has completed its summer season activities with an Annual General Meeting on September 4th at the Mission Springs Restaurant.
In their second year of operation there were 61 members and a total of 121 participants from all over the Valley. It was encouraging to see the increased participation in road racing particularly in the junior age group and the number of women. The venue at Mission Raceway is very popular for race training in a safe environment. The circuit is just over a kilometer in length with enough variety to be interesting. There were 23 events over the season for a nominal membership fee, probably the best value in the sport! The Club is coached by Bruce Wenting who sponsors the use of the track facility. Families are encouraged to make it an evening for kids of all age to ride on the many other pathways and dirt piles.
Blake Chersinoff is the real seasonal winner coming in second in the points total for $75.00, first in attendance for $25.00 and first Junior for another $50.00. The points winner of $100.00 was Scott Laliberte from Port Moody and third was Dylan Sebel from Mission receiving $50.00. Dylan also established a new Hill Climb Record on "Frog Hill" at 6 minutes, 55 seconds and the best time of 24 min. 36 sec on the 18 kilometre Time Trial course on Nicomen Island Trunk Rd. The points winner for women was Alison Testroete of Abbotsford who also won $50.00. She is now winter training for speed skating at the Calgary Training Centre.
The new executive for the next season will be: Chair - Bruce Wenting, Vice Chair- Elmar Bertelsen, Treasurer - Georg Jensen, Secretary - Peg Wenting, Member-at-Large - Bart Nakano. Bart is also the Cycling Director at Pacific Sport - Fraser Valley Region.
During the Winter Season the Club will hold Sunday group rides from Tim Horton's new location at the Junction Mall in Mission. The rides leave at 10:30 am. Elmar Bertelsen will lead the leisurely paced riders and Bruce Wenting, the tempo ride if it is necessary to split the group. Please have fenders or prepare to stay at the back of the pack!
Next Spring season starts Wednesday, April 9th, 2003 at the Mission Raceway at 6:30 pm. Membership forms will be available after the new year.
