September 15, 2002 (SAN FRANCISCO) - In a completely International finish, Charles Dionne (CAN) of 7UP/NutraFig won the second annual San Francisco Grand Prix presented by BMC Software today in front of an estimated 500,000 spectators. Henk Vogels (AUS) of Mercury finished second and moved into the top spot in the 2002 Pro Cycling Tour Point Standings. Italian Massimo Giunti of Acqua & Sapone finished third.

Four-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong crossed the line sixth. Last year's winner George Hincapie, who finished 15th, captured the WebCor King of the Mountain award. Only 49 of the 180 riders finished. The 109-mile course took the pros up the grueling Taylor (13 times) and Fillmore (8 times) Street climbs with a total elevation of 7,700 feet.

"San Francisco rocks!‰ said Dionne who takes home the $10,000 winner's check along with a brand new Saturn Ion. "Hopefully this win will open the doors for my team. I came to San Francisco to prove I'm not just a sprinter, and successfully did that today.‰


Charles Dionne gagne la plus importante course de sa carrière

Montréal, le 15 septembre 2002 (Sportcom) - " C'est la folie ", lâche Charles Dionne, complètement subjugué par sa victoire au Grand Prix cycliste de San Francisco. " C'est une des plus belles journées de ma vie ", ajoute-t-il, à bout de souffle.

L'exploit réussit par le coureur de St-Rédempteur est impressionnant, lui qui n'a que 23 ans. Le parcours du Grand Prix est exigeant : 176 kilomètres dans les rues de San Francisco, dont la difficile montée de la rue Fillmore qui revenait à huit reprises. Le peloton de 176 coureurs était aussi extrêmement relevé comme en témoigne la présence de Lance Armstrong, ce qui donne d'autant plus de crédit à la victoire du cycliste de St-Rédempteur. Le Grand Prix de San Francisco est considéré comme l'une des plus importantes courses aux États-Unis.

" J'ai prouvé que j'étais plus qu'un sprinter aujourd'hui : je suis également un bon grimpeur. " Dionne, qui était déçu de ne pas participer au tour de l'Avenir, n'en revient tout simplement pas de voir comment les choses ont tourné pour lui. " Je ne m'attendais pas à ça ! Je n'ai jamais signé autant d'autographes. "

Dionne a gagné au sprint qui regroupait six coureurs. Outre Armstrong, Dionne a eu raison de Viatcheslav Ekimov (USPS), Henk Vogels (2e), Massimo Giunti (3e) et Tom Leaper (Navigators).

L'athlète membre de l'équipe SevenUp - Nutra Fig et commandité par Norampac espère que cette victoire pourra lui ouvrir des portes. " Les Américains ne savent peut-être pas comment prononcer mon nom, mais j'espère que dorénavant, ils le reconnaîtront ", a conclu Dionne qui n'a rien perdu de son franc-parler dans l'euphorie de la victoire.
