With the support of the Waterloo C.C. Flying Dogs, Bell Canada Yellowpages & several individual sponsors the Ontario Track Championships were held at the demanding Delhi Velodrome on Saturday in Windell Centre . The day started out with fog which delayed the start of the Kilo by 30 minutes. The riders were very understanding and used the extra track time as an extended warm-up.

The first event of the day was the Senior Men Kilo, Fast time was set by Haik (Gary) Beglarov of the Hummingbirds C.C. in 1:16.10 seconds, Silver medal went to Brooks Rapley just 3/10's of a second behind Beglarov, In 3rd position saw the return of super fast Cat 1 road racer Kevin Speacht of the Midweek Club. Julia Bradley of the Opus Woman's Team set fast time in the 500m tt in 43.15, In silver was Michelle Penne Martinin, Bronze went to new comer to the track was Amanda Cox from Toronto. In Masters Competition Rob Good of the Waterloo Flying Dogs Timed in at 39.10 . The battle for silver was very close with only 9/100's of a second separating Marc Antonio from Hummingbirds c.c. new comer Lawrence Kurtz from Thornhill Ontario.

The next event was the individual Pursuit the Senior men went head to head again with the event determined in the last lap for Gold & Bronze medals. For Gold Kevin Speacht out lasted the hard charging Micheal Moore to take top honors by less than 1 second. In the Bronze Medal round saw new Hummingbirds C.C. standout Taylor Martin squeak into 3rd position with an inspired last lap effort to nip Wayne Luther to the line. The women's event was dominated by Julia Bradley who took Gold followed by Amanda Cox for silver & Shelley Christensen (St. Catherine's C.C.) took home the Bronze medal. The Master's Pursuit was very evenly matched with the winner Craig Doucet (London C.C.) winning his first Gold track medal by putting the pressure on long time track racer Rob Cheskey (HamiltonC.C.) for silver & Rob Good went home with the Bronze.

In the sprint competition all 3 divisions put on spectacular racing with the Senior men Gold & Bronze medal rounds being tied at 1 win each with the medals coming down to a winner take all event. For gold Haik Bglarov jumped early and defeated Brooks Rapley who took silver. In the Bronze medal round first year Senior Taras Kleban (Mid Week Club) out sprinted Taylor Martin to win in a photo finish. The margin of victory was less than the width of a tire. Julia Bradley(Opus) jumped early for gold and beat a great effort of Michelle Penne Martnin. Amanda Cox sprinted home for bronze. For the 3rd year in a row Rob Good (FlyingDogs) took the Gold medal with a tough ride from new comer Lawrence Kurtz (Hummingbirds) earning a well deserved Silver medal. Marc Antonio out sprinted Steve Ciazynski for the bronze medal.

The last event of the day the Scratch Races saw several outstanding performances with all races going down to the final laps to determine the final out come. Kevin Speacht out distanced Brooks Rapley & Taylor Martin for Gold, Silver, Bronze. Julia Bradley won her fourth Gold medal of the event by lapping the field, Shelly Christensen & Michelle Penne Martinin took Silver & Bronze. Rob Cheskey won his first Gold medal of the championships by Lapping the field in the Masters Category. Steve Ciazynski took silver with Rob Good hanging on for Bronze.

In the Olympic Sprint the finishing order was Hummingbirds C.C. 1st., Midweek Club 2nd, Masters Combined 3rd, The Ladies 4th.

The most outstanding performance of the Championships was put in by the youngest rider in the meet. 14 year old Megan Csikos who participated head to head in every event with the women throughout the day. To the roar of cheering spectators Megan was not put off by her older competitors and won the Miss & Out race by laying down a tremendous Flying lap of 23.87seconds to take the Gold medal and her first ever Medal in her racing Career.

Medals are one thing but the top riders on the money list were; 1st. Julia Bradley $100.00, 2nd. Kevin Speacht / Rob Good $60.00 each, 3rd. Haik Belgarov $50.00. a total of $840.00 & 37 Medals were distributed to all the riders at the medal ceremony at the end of the day.

The next events in the Ontario Track League are Saturday August 3rd & 17th, Hummingbirds International Grand Prix is scheduled for Saturday August 31st. More information to follow on events & prize list to follow.
