Daucourt Takes Mudfest

We just got off the telephone with Ritchey rider Chrissy Redden, whosummed up the Budapest World Cup in one word: Blecch!

It rained off and on in the days leading up to the race, and was lightly raining when the race began. Despite this, the organizers decided to neither shorten the 5 lap race (7 kilometre laps), nor use the alternate rain route. The result was, in Chrissy‚s words: „horrible. There was so much of carrying the bike on your back. You had to just keep trudging along - by the end of the race I had 3 gears left. It was impossible to climb anything, so you had to get off and run, which is what got Chantal her win.‰ Daucourt ran by American Alison Dunlap on the last climb to take the victory, with Rita Gunn-Dahl (another good runner, said Chrissy) in third. Alison Sydor finished 4th, and Redden 8th. Chrissy wasn‚t sure about other Canadians (we will get final results up as soon as they are available).

This will move Sydor solidly back into the lead, since Paola Pezzo was one of the approximately 50% of the field that dropped out (Chrissy‚s estimate). Chrissy also revealed that a large proportion of the field is sick - many of those who participated in the Haute Garonne stage race last weekend. „we were in such close quarters during the race, and it rained all during the last double stage day. Alison was pretty sick all week, and then I got sick. Melanie McQuaid is sick too, and dropped out today because of it.‰

New Track in New York

There are plans to build a permanent wooden velodrome track at Holiday Mountain Ski Resort, about 6-7 hours south of Montreal, in Monticello, New York. The track is scheduled to be open by August. Contact phbstephen@aol.com for more information.
