Coaching Association of Canada announces this year's prestigious sport leadership award recipients

OTTAWA - The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) announced this year's recipients of the following prestigious sport leadership awards at a news conference today (November 4th) in Montreal:

Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards

3M Coaching Canada Awards

3M Canada, in collaboration with CAC, honours a male and female coach in both high performance and developmental sport for their outstanding contribution to their profession and to athlete development.

The recipients of the 3M Coaching Canada Awards are:
Cross country ski coach Dave Wood of Canmore, Alberta in the male high performance category.
Ice hockey coach Danièle Sauvageau of Deux-Montagnes, Quebec in the female high performance category.
Basketball coach Mike MacKay of Truro, Nova Scotia in the male developmental sport category.
Boxing coach Margaret Canty of Windsor, Ontario in the female developmental sport category.

The runners-up for the 3M Coaching Canada Awards are:

Short-track speed skating coach Guy Thibault of Le Gardeur, Quebec in the male high performance category.
Long track speed skating coach Moira D'Andrea of Calgary, Alberta in the female high performance category.
Cycling coach Alain Levasseur of Contrecoeur, Quebec in the male developmental sport category:
Levasseur is an experienced and multi-award winning road and track cycling coach. Among the cyclists who have been coached by Levasseur is world championship medallist Lori-Ann Muenzer. He is the head coach at the Club cycliste Dynamiks de Contrecoeur.

"When I joined the Dynamiks club I felt I had joined a family," said cyclist Jean-Charles Szutke. "There is a lot of support and encouragement. Alain is a coach who is very easy to approach and discuss things with."

in the female developmental sport category.

Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards

Petro-Canada, in collaboration with CAC, recognize coaches whose athletes have won medals in open world championships, at an Olympic Games, at a Special Olympics World Games, or at a Paralympic Games.

There are 28 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award
recipients this year.

The recipients of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence
Awards are Tamas Buday, Sr., of Mississauga, Ont., who coached the men's C-4 1000m to the silver medal at the 2002 world canoe championships.
Steve Bush, of North Vancouver, B.C., coach of 2002 double world water ski champion Jaret Llewellyn and world bronze medallist Drew Ross.
Ron Brown, of Winnipeg, Man., coach of Jennifer Saunders, singles silver medallist at the 2002 racquetball world championships.
Cathy Dalton, of Whitby, Ont., coach of Canada's world bronze medallists in synchronized skating.
Moira D'Andrea, of Calgary, Alta., who coached Cindy Klassen to the Olympic 3000m long track speed skating bronze medal at Salt Lake.
Yvon De Blois, of Calgary, Alta., coach of the Olympic short track speed skating 3000m women's relay bronze medallists.
Tim Frick, of Port Coquitlam, B.C., coach of Canada's 2002 world champion women's wheelchair basketball team.
Gene Friesen, of Saskatoon, Sask., who coached the Kelley Law rink to Olympic bronze.
Michel Gagnon, of Longueuil, Que., coach of Josée Grand'Maître, singles bronze medallist at the 2002 world racquetball championships.
Tony Hall, of Dartmouth, N.S., who coached Steve Giles to C-1 1000m bronze at the 2002 world canoe championships.
Sean Ireland, of Calgary, Alta., coach of Olympic 500m speed skating champion Catriona LeMay Doan.
Frédéric Jobin, of Quebec City, Que., coach of Caroline Brunet, 2002 world silver medallist in K-1 500m.

Catherine Marsal Joins Team Rona

Montreal, Quebec, November 5, 2002 - The RONA Cycling Team is proud to announce that the French cyclist Catherine Marsal signed to join the team in 2003.

Catherine " Cathy " Marsal, who raced with Saturn-Timex in 2002, needs no introduction in the world of cycling. Junior world road race champions at 16, junior world pursuit champion at 17, Elite world road race champion at 19, team time trial world champion in 1991, the 31 year-old athlete made the world championship podium ten times in her career. Four times a member of the French Olympic team, she also won several of the most prestigious stage races in the world -- two Tours de l'Aude, one Giro d'Italia, one Grand Prix de la Mutualité, one Étoile Vosgienne, two Tours of Texas, one Tour of Norway, one Tour of the European Community. Cathy Marsal also held the world hour record in 1995. With a bicycle complying with the old UCI rules, she rode 47.112 kilometres in 60 minutes.

„Leaving Saturn was not an easy decision for me‰, said Marsal, who in 2002 wore the leader's jersey for four days and won a stage at the Vuelta Castilla y León in Spain, and also won stages in the Tour de l'Aude and Wendy's International. „Saturn is a great team. But RONA gives me an environment to fulfil myself as a competitive cyclist. André (Aubut, Team RONA's manager) and I agreed that I can contribute to the team and still pursue personal goals. I'm very excited to have the opportunity to race with Geneviève (Jeanson), she's an outstanding competitor, I think we'll have a ball in the peloton!‰

„Cathy is a fantastic addition to our team, said André Aubut. She's not only a strong rider and a versatile racer, but she brings racing experience that our young team still lacks. She's been at the forefront for a dozen years, she knows both the European and the North American environments. It's barely an overstatement to say that she's more experienced than all the other RONA women added together! She'll be a solid and reliable road captain, and her presence will benefit all the girls on the team.‰

Catherine " Cathy " Marsal, qui courait chez Saturn-Timex en 2002, se passe de présentation dans les milieux cyclistes. Championne du monde junior sur route à 16 ans et de poursuite à 17 ans, championne du monde Élite sur route à 19 ans, championne du monde au contre-la-montre par équipes en 1991, l'athlète de 31 ans a accédé dix fois au podium en championnats du monde. " Ça n'a pas été une décision facile pour moi de quitter Saturn ", explique celle qui cette année a remporté des étapes au Tour de l'Aude et à la Wendy's International, en plus de gagner une étape et de porter le maillot de leader pendant quatre jours à la Vuelta Castilla y León en Espagne. " Saturn est une grande équipe. Mais RONA m'offre un environnement qui me permettra de mieux m'exprimer comme cycliste. J'ai discuté avec André (Aubut, le directeur sportif de l'équipe) et nous sommes d'accord à l'effet que je peux servir les intérêts de l'équipe RONA tout en poursuivant des objectifs personnels. J'ai hâte de courir avec Geneviève (Jeanson), elle est tout simplement géniale, je crois qu'on va bien s'amuser dans le peloton! "

" Cathy est une addition fantastique pour notre équipe, a commenté André Aubut. Non seulement elle est une très forte rouleuse et une coureuse polyvalente, mais elle nous apporte une expérience de course qui fait encore défaut à notre jeune équipe. Elle est au premier plan depuis une douzaine d'années, elle connaît le circuit européen et le circuit nord-américain. J'exagère à peine en disant qu'elle a plus d'expérience à elle seule que toutes les autres filles de l'équipe réunies! Elle nous fera une capitaine de route solide et fiable et toutes les filles profiteront de sa présence. "
