3rd Annual Cycling Celebration

There are only ten days left before the 3rd Annual Cycling Celebration, which will be held November 16th, 2002, at the Steam Whistle Brewery in Toronto.

This year‚s Celebration will recognize and honour the Ontario athletes involved in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, as well as the 2002 Ontario Summer Games athletes.

Top Ontario cyclists and Commonwealth Games medallists Chrissy Redden (Subaru/Gary Fisher) and Susan Palmer-Komar have already confirmed their attendance. Mark Walters (Navigators) winner of the First Union US Pro Championships, and Michael Barry (US Postal) who has recorded numerous top 10 finishes in Europe are attending. Dede Demet-Barry will be there as well.

We invite you to come and meet the Ontario cyclists who are among the leading contenders for the Canadian spots at the Road World Championships to be held in October 2003 in Hamilton.

Join us recognizing athletes, commissaires, and coaches who are making a significant contribution to cycling in Ontario.

Helmet Laws Study Out

A study by the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto, that was published in the November issue of Pediatrics, has concluded that in provinces where helmet laws require children to wear helmets while riding their bikes, there has been a in a significant reduction in head injuries.

The study compared head injuries among bike riders in provinces with helmet laws versus those without helmet laws over the four year period from 1994 to 1998. During that period, head injuries fell 45% in provinces with helmet laws, compared to a 27% decline in provinces without helmet laws.

Five provinces have bike helmet laws: BC, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta and Ontario. The first three listed have legislation requiring all bike riders to wear helmets, while Ontario and Alberta target riders under 18. The study says that bike helmets can reduce the risk of head injury up to 88%.
