Hamilton, ON - Chairman David Braley announced today that Neil Lumsden will be named General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the 2003 World Cycling Championships.
A Burlington-native and former General Manager and Director of Football Operations for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Lumsden will continue his longtime commitment to Canadian sport and bring his industry expertise to represent Canada on an international stage.
"I am very eager to take on this challenging and exciting role of GM and COO of the 2003 World Cycling Championships," Lumsden remarked. "This is an excellent opportunity for Hamilton to step up onto the world stage and show that we can host a world-class event in a world-class city."
Lumsden will take a leave of absence from his current position as President of True Gravity Sports and Entertainment Consulting in Toronto to undertake this opportunity.
Braley is also pleased with Lumsden's commitment. "I am confident that with Neil's support and involvement in the Hamilton community, we will have the ability to create an important sport legacy for Canadian athletes, and successfully showcase Canada's sport system on an international level."
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) awarded the Championships to Hamilton on October 3, 1999. This represents the second time that this event has come to Canada, and the first time in Ontario. The 2003 World Cycling Championships will take place from October 6 to 12, 2003.
The weeklong event consists of 10 races and will attract approximately 450,000 spectators - 220,000 of whom will come from outside the province and 85,000 of whom will come from outside Canada.
