News from the National Cycling Centre in Calgary

We are two weeks and counting till our first indoor velodrome training session of the year for our sprint group based here in Calgary. We head to Burnaby, BC on February 8th for a two week camp indoors on the Harry Jerome Sports Centre Track in Vancouver.

Here in Calgary we have been super active, in the weight room and also making use of the SRM ergometer in the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary. This year we have a young group of athletes, after the retirement of Jim Fisher and Doug Baron last year but this young group is full of excitement and tons of ambition.

The newest member of our training group is an A class BMX professional from Airdrie, Alberta. Kenneth Cools is his name, and hopefully this year we will hear a lot more about this young 24 year old. After 6 weeks training with our crew, he has already posted some very impressive results on the SRM ergo. Check out the link to the Airdrie BMX site for some pictures of Ken in action.


Wetlands in Motion - Bike, Hike, Run

Basic registration is $20.00 with an opportunity to collect pledges to support the environmental projects of the Friends of Wye Marsh.

Three bike routes are available:
• 1. The Ultimate Challenge Ride - a mountain bike experience through the Wye Valley. This intermediate technical ride is a 20 km challenge with rail beds, bush trails, elevations, roadway, fields and more
• 2. Wye Marsh Cycle Road Tour - a 50 km ride in Tay Township through the Medonte Highlands. Geared for experienced road cyclists and recumbent riders. Rolling terrain with challenging climbs. Not one road's the same
• 3. Family Ride at Wye Marsh 10 km family course running from the Wye Marsh Centre to Midland's waterfront and back along traffic free trails.

Pacific Sport Athletes Receive Awards

Thirty seven athletes from PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria to receive 39 "George Heller Awards"

Awards recognize past year's top achievements and promote Canadian athletes as positive role models for the next generation of young British Columbians

Victoria BC - Thirty-seven athletes from eight sports will be presented with the inaugural "George Heller Awards" at the PacificSport Celebration of Sport 2003, Saturday, January 25th, at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

The awards, designed to recognize the top sports achievements of the past year by PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria's athletes are awarded to those athletes who have won medals at World Championships or multi-sport games like the Olympic or Commonwealth Games. In the sport of rugby, award winners will have received an international cap while playing for the Pacific Pride.

"To have 39 world-class achievements in the first year of these awards is phenomenal," said Roger Skillings, President and Chief Executive Officer of PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria. "The athletes honoured this evening have not only achieved excellence on the world stage, but they have become part of the fabric of Victoria and we're so proud to have them as part of our community."
