Quebec Doctor and Athletes Subject of Investigation

According to an article published in today's edition of La Press this morning a Quebec doctor is under investigation for administering EPO to a number of athletes (11 in total) including cyclists. The matter was brought to the attention of the FQSC by a cyclist who had been offered the banned substance by the doctor.

Incidents under investigation occurred in the years 1998 to 2001.

The information was also reported by CBC's french language broadcaster, Radio-Canada.

Names of the athletes have not been revealed, and all information pertaining to the investigation is being withheld, prior to a decision being reached on February 12th. The case is being heard from February 24 to 28th.

Heading the investigation is the National Scientific Research Institute (INRS).

Manibal Selected as Candidate for IOC Award

Daniel Manibal, president and managing director of the Montreal Women‚s Cycling World Cup has been designated by Mr. Hein Verbruggen, president of the International Cycling Union (UCI) as their candidate for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) award: Women and Sport (2003).

Organizer for the past 6 years of the Montreal Women‚s Cycling World Cup and The Greater Montreal Tour, Mr Manibal has been recognized for his contributions to the promotion of women's cycling.

About the award:
Every year, six trophies (one per continent, and one at world level) are awarded to a woman or a man (former athlete, coach, administrator or journalist) or to an organisation that has worked to develop, encourage and strengthen the participation of women and girls in physical and sports activities, in coaching or in administrative and decision-making structures, as well as for the promotion of women journalists and women's sport in the media. Each NOC and each International Federation can propose one candidate, whose file is studied by the IOC selection committee composed of members of the "Women and Sport" working group.

The awards ceremony will be held in March 2003

Un Italien enlève la première étape

Le vent a eu son mot à dire dans la première étape de l'Étoile de Bessèges, une compétition cycliste de cinq jours qui s'est amorcée mercredi, entre St Cannat et Ste Tulle (France). Un parcours de 153,5 kilomètres, comprenant deux bonnes montées, attendait les 127 coureurs présents au départ. L'Italien Fabio Baldato (Alessio) n'a pas été indisposé par la température de 3 degrés et il s'est imposé au sprint devant Franck Bouyer (La Boulangère).

Après une première heure plutôt tranquille, de petits groupes de coureurs ont commencé à attaquer. Après la dernière montée de 7 kilomètres, à la 125e borne, les fuyards se sont regroupés pour former un peloton de 25 cyclistes. Le peloton principal a chassé durant une dizaine de kilomètres avant de lancer la serviette.

"Ça s'est bien passé dans les côtes, mais quand nous étions en bordure (vent qui souffle de côté), j'avais plus de difficulté, a souligné Dominique Perras. Plusieurs équipes avaient des membres dans l'échappée alors les gens ont peu travaillé jusqu'à la fin."

Staf Scheirlincks, coéquipier du Québécois chez Flanders – IteamNova faisait partie de l'échappée payante et il a pris la cinquième place de l'étape. Pour sa part, Perras a complété l'épreuve dans le peloton principal en 36e place, avec un retard de 13 min 33 secondes.

"Pour les prochains jours, les équipes des cinq premiers au classement vont devoir travailler et chasser les échappées. Une bonne nuit de sommeil sera importante car j'aurai beaucoup de travail demain. L'équipe est super contente de voir qu'un des nôtres est en aussi bonne position", a conclu Perras.

La deuxième étape de l'Étoile de Bessèges sera une boucle de 154 kilomètres, départ et arrivée à Marseille.
