Klassen & Hughes Gold in Sweden Goteborg, Sweden

Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg became the first Canadian in 27 years to win the overall title at the world all around speed skating championships on Sunday while Clara Hughes of Winnipeg took the gold medal in the 5,000 metres.

Klassen's thirs place in the 1,500 and 5,000 on Sunday were enough to hold her 1st place overall. Winnipeg's Sylvia Burka is the only other Canadian woman to win the all around world title.

Clara Hughes dominated the 5,000. Her time of 7:25:88 was 3:38 ahead of 2nd place Pechstein. Klassen was 3rd. It's the first time Canada's ever won gold in the 5,000 at the worlds and the first individual distance gold medal since Burka's 1,500 victory in 1976.

Hughes won bronze in the 3,000 on Saturday.

L'Italien Fabio Baldato a conservé son maillot de meneur jusqu'au bout pour gagner l'Étoile de Bessèges. Le coureur de l'équipe Alessio l'avait acquis lors de la première des cinq étapes.

La dernière étape, comme les quatre précédentes, s'est achevée par un sprint massif remporté par l'Estonien Jaan Kirsipuu.

Dominique Perras, seul Québécois inscrit, a bien travaillé pour son coéquipier Staf Scheirlinckx, qui a terminé quatrième au classement général. Perras a bien aimé sa première course au sein de sa nouvelle équipe Flanders-IteamNova. "Je trouve qu'on a bien su travailler ensemble. On ne se connaît pas encore bien, mais ça viendra."

Le cycliste de Brossard dressait un bilan somme toute positif de cette première compétition d'importance de la saison 2003. "J'étais assez en forme pour aider l'équipe, même si je n'étais pas au sommet de celle-ci. J'ai eu une tendinite cet hiver et je suis un peu en retard dans ma préparation. Je ne m'en fais
pas trop avec ça, après tout, les saisons sont longues."
