The early NRC racing calendar was officially kicked off today (February 14th) in sunny and warm Arizona. The 2003 edition of the three day stage race featured a new time trial course outside of Phoenix. Held on a certified 20 kilometer out and back course, the race against the clock was fairly flat and the pavement chip seal. The wind was a slight head-cross going out on the course, with a nice tailwind helping on the way home. Finishing with top honors for the day, and the grabbing the race lead, were Sandy Perrins and Genevieve Jeanson (Rona).

Jeanson finished with a time of 28:37:41. Only four seconds back with a time of 28:41 was Manon Jutras, newly signed to the Saturn Team for 2003. In third was Catherine Marsal six seconds back on her Rona teammate. Saturn's Jessica Phillips was fourth with a time of 29:53 and 1:16 back.

In the men's event, it was Sandy Perrins with the win, finishing with a time of 26:23. Sixteen seconds behind him was Aaron Olsen, followed by Peter Mazur in third. Saturn's Ivan Dominguez finished fourth with a time of 26:46.

With a challenging circuit race on Saturday for both the men and the women, the race is far from decided. There is an additional 35 seconds of bonus time to be had for the women and 50 additional seconds for the men. The race wraps up on Sunday with a downtown criterium.

Team dEVo/Powerbar Hosts Ten Event Bicycle Race Series

In 2003 Team dEVo/Powerbar continues to host its annual spring road bicycle race series, but this year the series will see an expansion from 7 races to 10 and include new venues in Abbottsford. Jeremy Storie is the founder and organizer of Team dEVo/Powerbar which is a youth development road based cycling team in it fifth year of existence. Started as an off-shoot from an adult club, Storie saw a need for development of youth cycling in the province on BC to help grow the sport, so he started the club for under 23 riders and it has taken off and grown every year.

The race series is something that has also evolved and grown since its inception five years ago. The past four years has seen events run in Langley Township on March weekends, with courses on River Rd. just east of Fort Langley, Gloucester Industrial Park, and Zero Ave between 232nd St and 240 St. For 2003 these course will be retained, with the addition of two new course in Abbottsford. Challenging courses in Abbottsford will be at Zero Ave between 272nd St and LeFevre ( March 22 ) as well as the hilly Bradner Rd course between MacTavish and Inter Provincial Hwy ( March 9 ). These events, while they are early season tests, showcase some of the best talent in road racing in BC and Canada.

Team dEVo/Powerbar members take turns working at the races by marshalling corners and running the finish line and participating in the events. It is the team's way of putting back into the sport. Team dEVo/Powerbar has had great success over the past few years, placing two members on the National Junior Team that has competed at the World Cycling Championships in such locations as Italy in 2001 and Belgium 2003. Langley resident and Team dEVo/Powerbar member Marsh Cooper hopes to return in 2003 and again represent his country at the World Championships as they are held for only the fifth time outside of Europe, the traditional road cycling hotbed.
