Track Cycling Coaches Wanted

The Greater Victoria Velodrome Association (GVVA) is launching in June a new program to teach basic track cycling skills, called "Learn to Ride the Track". "Learn to Ride the Track" is a four week program aimed at introducing track skills to people interested in riding the track for fun, fitness and competition. The curriculum for the program is designed by Assistant National Coach Steve Lund.

Cyclists with experience in track riding and racing are required to deliver the program designed by Steve . Coaches will receive training in the curriculum, and instructional pointers at a clinic conducted by Steve, Saturday May 16, 1:00 to 4:00 PM. The number of coaches required will depend on demand, but a high ratio of coaches to riders is planned. Coaches will be paid $30 per session of approximately two hours.

The program will be offered three times this season, June, July and August. The program will run on weekday evenings and weekends, in sessions of approximately two hours. The number of groups in each session will depend on demand. There will be groups offered for women, men , under 18's, and over 35's.

The Learn to Ride the Track program will be publicized to Greater Victoria as part of the promotion for the World Cup of Track Cycling , May 28-30.

The model for the Learn to Ride the Track program is "Women on Wheels", a novice women's road skills program that attracted 45 participants in it's inaugural session in April and May. 30 of the graduates have committed to ride a special novice women's race at the 7th Annual Bastion Square Cycling Grand Prix, May 31. Women on Wheels is a project of the Victoria International Bicycle Race Society and the Commonwealth Centre for Sport Development.

Interested coaches should contact one of the people below, and indicate if they are interested in coaching, whether they can attend the Saturday clinic, and be sure to leave their phone and fax numbers and e-mail address.

HADFIELD SHOWS CLASS (AND HANSENS!) Tim Hadfield (Kissena) made one of his rare local appearances at last night's Midweek Club Scratch Criterium and showed the spectators and the rest of the 66-strong field why he°s so successful.

Only five laps into the 44 kilometer event, Tim, along with Matt Hansen (Jet Fuel) and big brother Jeff (Neworld) broke from the fast-moving (44kph) bunch and the trio maintained a twenty-to-thirty second gap for the rest of the event. In the closing laps, a chase group of three including Greg Cavanagh (Woodstock) vainly tried to bridge but they were absorbed by the peleton and Jet Fuel's Heath Cockburn took the bunch gallop with team-mate Joe Juliano in 5th place.

After last week's hairy riding, it was refreshing to see the improvement in race etiquette and the efforts of all to stay within the designated course - especially since we were paid visits by two separate Peel Police patrol cars.

Next week, the event returns to a handicap format and will start at 7.15pm. Further information will be on the Midweek Hotline at (905) 271-8300 (1).
