Solano Bicycle Classic - Fairfield, California

Saturn Reports

The final stage of the Men's Pro Solano Bicycle Classic ended as it began with Saturn's Chris Horner capturing the top spot on the podium in the final stage.

The final stage of the race was a simple circuit race that saw Horner's Saturn teammate Ina Teutenberg win in the morning. The final 13 lap, 82 mile race saw an early break of seven clear the field. Major contenders for the stage win in the break were 7-UP's John Lieswyn, Marty Nothstein (Navigators) and Mark McCormack (Saturn). The break looked like it might stick until five laps to go when the time gap quickly closed and all the teams wound things up for what looked to be a field sprint.

However, three corners from the final criterium course, race leader Horner sensed an opportunity and pounced. Catching all off guard, Horner put time into what was a serious chase to bring him back to the fold. In a mighty effort, the Saturn rider held off the galloping field for a win of about 50 meters in front of Greg Henderson (7-UP) and Gord Fraser in third. Saturn's Ivan Dominguez was fourth.

Horner's stage win only increased his lead of the overall over second place Jonathon Vaughters (Prime Alliance). Vaughters finished the race winning the King of the Mountain competition in front of Saturn's Will Frischkorn. Saturn won the team competition and finished the weekend winning three of the four stages.

Women

The Solano Bicycle Classic wrapped up today in Fairfield, CA under clear blue skies and perfect bike racing temperatures. With the wind relenting after three days of high gusts, the circuit race through the gated neighborhoods offered little challenge for the peloton. At the end of the day the overall titles remained unchanged with T-Mobile's Kimberly Bruckner leaving Solano County dressed in Gold. Top honors of the day were decided in the final meters with Saturn sprinter Ina Teutenberg taking the win.

The women's race saw what appeared to be an unthreatening break go up the road early in the race. The highest placed rider was Sandy Espeseth (Victory Brewing) who was well over six minutes down on race leader Kimberly Bruckner. With Espeseth was Saturn's Ina Teutenberg, Catherine Marsal, Jenny Eyerman, Anne Samplonius, and Erin Carter. The break worked smoothly together, and sat at thirty seconds off the main field for the first of the 5.6 mile laps. T-Mobile seemed unconcerned with the time splits until they topped the two minute mark. Bruckner's soldiers then went to the front to minimize the time the break would gain.

Meanwhile, up in front, the break began to fall apart, with Samplonius, Carter and Eyerman falling off the pace. Espeseth pushed the pace with the hope of moving up in the overall from her eighth place position. The three quickly put time into the three chasers and came into the final finishing stretch for a three up sprint which was handily won by Saturn's Teutenberg. Espeseth was second over Marsal.

Behind race winner Teutenberg, the three chasers were absorbed and the field arrived in total for a sprint for fourth, taken by Tina Mayolo over Saturn's Lyne Bessette. Bruckner arrived safely in the field for the overall win. Saturn's Manon Jutras finished second with her teammate Bessette in third.

Blizzard Bike Club (Mile 45 Alaska Highway) - Fort St. John, BC

Gord Harris won his first race, Sunday, on a very windy Baldonnel Road Circuit, with a time of 51: 34. Lisa Verbisky was second at 56:19 and Ken Nix was third at 56:42.

Eighteen riders came out for the 'Handicapped Start' event. The rider's times are corrected so the fastest riders are last and the other riders get head starts based on last years' 16 km. time trial times. Some riders did 32 km's and some 16km. The riders leave the start at their 'corrected' times. The first one to the finish line, wins!

Gord Harris held off a determined charge by the group of Lisa Verbisky, Ken Nix and Ross Garbutt. Gord won with a corrected time of 51:34. Lisa Verbisky held off Ken Nix for second spot. Barb Polehoykie was 4th at 57:08 and Ross Garbutt 5th at 59:13.

Lucy Janosek was 6th at 59:32, Robert Martens 7th at 1:01:32, Stephen Ferris 1:01:33, Trevor McDonell 1:03:13 and Pat Ferris 1:04:54 rounded out the top ten riders.

Wim Kok was 11th at 1:05:36, Gary Hilderman 1:07:01, Mike Hientzman 1:10:07, Erik Snucins 1:10:53, Matt Jarnagin and Roger St. Jean tied for 15th at 1:11:46, Ed Fornelli 1:13:20 and Jean Guillemette at 1:13:21.

Fastest time of the day was Robert Martens of the 'Scratch Division' with an actual time of 55:23 minutes, one second faster than Stephen Ferris.

This was the sixth race of the club's 2003 event schedule.

Mission accomplie pour Dominique Perras

Montréal, le 30 mars 2003 (Sportcom) - Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno-Scanavino) a fait plaisir à ses partisans en terminant au deuxième rang de la cinquième et dernière étape de la Semaine cycliste internationale Coppi Bartali, qui reliait les villes de Castellarano et Sassuolo, sur 162 kilomètres. Malgré sa belle prestation, le " Pirate " s'est fait devancer au fil d'arrivée par le Moldave Ruslan Ivanov (Alessio). Dominique Perras a complété l'étape aux environs de la trentième place, à quatre minutes du gagnant. (Les résultats officiels n'étaient pas disponibles au moment d'écrire ces lignes.)

Au classement général final, l'Italien Mirko Celestino (Saeco) a été en mesure de protéger son maillot bleu de meneur, en terminant les cinq jours de course avec une priorité de cinq secondes sur Francesco Casagrande de l'équipe Lampre.

" C'était vraiment la guerre, car avant l'étape d'aujourd'hui (dimanche), il y avait seulement une seconde qui séparait le premier du deuxième ", a révélé Perras, le seul membre de la formation Flanders-IteamNova qui a complété le tour. " Il y a eu plusieurs attaques durant toute la journée. Je me suis vraiment surpris car j'ai été dans le groupe de tête pendant toute la course sauf les dix derniers kilomètres. "

Perras est d'autant plus fier de sa prestation que seulement un peu plus d'une cinquantaine coureurs ont terminé l'épreuve sur un total de 150 partants.

" Je suis content car c'est incroyable comment les courses professionnelles italiennes sont difficiles. Ça monte tout le temps et je suis satisfait d'avoir passé au travers de cette façon. "

Le Brossardois sera de retour en selle samedi, aux Pays-Bas, pour la course Hel van het Mergelland.
