Men‚s World Cup # 5 - Plymouth, England
We just received word from Chrissy Redden (Team Ritchey) on the men‚s World Cup race today in Plymouth, England. After a very fast start, a group of 11 top riders were off the front in a train. Filip Meirhaeghe (Specialized) appeared to be the strongest, attacking a number of times and opening sizable gaps. On the third lap, on a steep, loose descent, there was a large crash, involving many of the frontrunners. Miguel Martinez (Sunn) was hurt badly enough to pull out of the race immediately, and Meirhaeghe lost many places, eventually finishing 17th. When the riders got themselves sorted out again, there were 6 left at the front - Cadel Evans, Bas Van Dooren, Christophe Sauser, Gregory Vollet, Hubert Pallhuber and Patrick Tolhoek. World Cup overall leader Evans was the obvious favourite, and he did not disappoint. Van Dooren had a clear lead for second, while 3rd and 4th came down to a sprint between Sauser and Vollet, with the former winning. The top Canadian was Andreas Hestler (Volvo-Cannondale) in 27th. A bit of a disappointment, but Chrissy said that he had a terrible start, well back in the 50‚s, and just kept steadily improving all race, picking off 5 or 6 places every lap.
The World Cup takes a break now until July (Canmore). Chrissy will be taking a few days of well deserved holiday in England before heading back to Canada. She says that she gets to spend two weeks at home before heading out on the road again. We would like to thank Chrissy for taking the time to telephone us each and every weekend and give us an insider‚s report on the World Cup.
