Five Day Mountain Bike Camp for Women in BC

Fernie Fat-Tire Adventures, one of Western Canada's premier mountain bike tour operators, and Fernie Alpine Resort, are teaming up to offer a one-of-a-kind mountain bike skills camp for intermediate to advanced female riders, featuring the terrain and trails that have made British Columbia famous in the mountain biking world.

The camp will feature 3 days of downhill mountain biking at Fernie Alpine Resort, 2 days of cross-country riding on the dozens of trails in Fernie, luxury accommodation at the resort, all meals, shuttle service to and from Calgary Airport, as well as additional evening activities such as hiking and river tubing.

The camp will be led by certified mountain bike coach Anie Boudreau from Whistler, BC, who has been coaching weekend camps around BC for several years, and is excited at the opportunity to spend five days with her charges. Participants will learn a variety of skills related to mountain biking, including maintenance, fitness tips, technical skills, stunt-riding, racing techniques and more.

CCA Partnership with VIA Rail continues in 2003 - 2004

The partnership with VIA Rail, which offers CCA member's discounts on Economy and VIA 1 classes, will continue throughout 2003.

There has been a minor change to the discount, due to new policies at VIA Rail. This change has resulted in a greater rebate by 5% for the Economy class, and a lesser rebate by 5% in VIA 1.

The new discounts are as follows, effective April 1, 2003 to April 1, 2004:
Economy class - 35% discount off regular fair VIA 1 - 5% discount off regular fair

The same conditions apply as before. Please use the Promotional code when booking on-line or through an agent. You will have to show your CCA/UCI card when picking up the tickets.

Le partenariat entre l'ACC et Via Rail, qui offre des rabais aux membres de l'ACC dans les classes d'économie et VIA 1, continuera en 2003.

Il y a eu un changement mineur à l'escompte, dû à de nouvelles politiques à VIA. Ce changement a comme conséquence une augmentation de 5% dans l'escompte pour la classe d'économie, et une diminution de 5% dans l'escompte pour la classe VIA 1.

Les nouveaux escomptes sont comme suit, efficace 1er avril 2003 jusqu'au 1er avril, 2004:
35 % de rabais – classe d'économie
5% de rabais – classe VIA 1

Bike & Hike Camping Weekend on Manitoulin Island

Bike & Hike Camping Weekend taking place at beautiful Gordon's Park on Manitoulin Island the Victoria Day long weekend in May. The weekend includes two nights camping (B&B, Tipi Tenting, Secluded Cabin also available), two cycle tours - one Saturday, one Sunday, solar heated swimming pool, Interpretive Centre Tour, night hike, mini putt competition, wind up pot luck luncheon & campfire socials.

Local residents on the island who would like to participate but not necessarily spend the night please know that you are more than welcome to participate. Likewise, for those of you wishing to seek alternative accomodations on site or elsewhere, rather than camping.

Blizzard Bike Club TIme Trial Fort St. John, BC

Stephen Ferris won the 16 km Blizzard Bike Club individual Baldonnel time trial, Thursday night, with a time of 27:29 minutes. Vaughn Hildebrand overcame a late start to catch second spot with 27:42 and Trevor McDonell did 27:59 for third. Pat Ferris was 4th at 28:23 and Mike Hientzman 5th at 28:46.

Thirty-three riders came out. Conditions were cool but pleasant.

Wim Kok was 6th at 30:09, Andrew Kovacs 30:31, Roger St. Jean 31:15, Gary Hilderman 31:47 and Ross Garbutt all made the top ten times.

Andy Bourgeois was 11th at 33:35, Ken Nix 34:15, Gord Harris 34:20, Jean Guillemette 34:38, Sam Keats 35:07, Art Ramsay 36:31, Adam Currie 36:38 and Dean Lowry 38:41.

Tammy Howes had the fastest Women's time with 33:18. Lisa Verbisky was second at 33:42 and Tessa Bilodeau third at 35:48. Lucy Janosek did 39:00, Angela Ripley 40:05, Erin Drummond 40:44 and Barb Polehoykie 41:54.

Brittany Lequiere won the 8 km event with 20:09. Jarrod Bell did 20:53 for second, Lois Harris third with 22:52, Susan MacKean 25:58 and Doreen McDonell 26:54.
Three riders could not finish due to flat tires.

Robert Martens will be trying to be the "King of Spring' for a sixth time, this Sunday, for the Blizzard Bicycle Club's first 'Classic' race.

The 'Queen of Spring' trophy for women will also be up for a new winner. Angela Maull edged out Erin Drummond for her first 'Queen of Spring'; win with a time of 54:18 in 2002.

Tim Ferris was the first 'King of Spring' back in 1997. He was the surprise winner when he out sprinted Robert Martens in a close finish. Robert Martens has dominated ever since.

It will be between Robert Martens, Vaughn Hildebrand and Dave Damery for 2003 with Stephen Ferris also close by. Tim Ferris and a contingent of Grande Prairie riders may also put in an appearance to make for a very fast and interesting race.

Race time for the 32 km race is 2:00 pm, from the 'Montney Pullout'. The race circuit goes from there and out to the Pineview Fairgrounds and returns.
