New Women's Squad

(April 23, 2003) World Of Difference Online Magazine today announced that it will be providing personal sponsorships for a quartet of promising young female racers for the
remainder of 2003. The monthly publication, billed as the 'e-zine for the globally inquisitive', will be providing a variety of financial, logistical and media-relations assistance to U.S. riders Allison Beall and Magen Long, Quebec native Audrey Lemieux, and Australian Emma Rickards as the centerpiece of their inaugural marketing campaign.

The program came about as a result of a recent story the magazine did on women's racing in Lithuania, says World Of Difference advertising manager Tony Katzenmeyer: "While researching the piece, our editor discovered that, unlike in most major cycling countries, developing women racers in the U.S. - the ones most in need of a helping hand- were often left to their own devices. Since we were already looking for a way to promote World Of Difference, we decided that this would be a unique way of doing it that was in keeping with our global focus - cycling is both the #2 spectator sport and #2 fitness activity worldwide. It's also a nice thing to do, helping a deserving group of young women to pursue their athletic dreams."

Each of the four women races under a unique set of circumstances. Allison Beall is a senior at the University of Idaho, where she is majoring in French; despite being the 2002 U.S. Under-23 National Time Trial Champion, Allison is currently without a team, and will be racing mostly in the Pacific Northwest. Audrey Lemieux is still a junior racer, but is considered perhaps the best Canadian prospect since Genevieve Jeanson; Audrey, the 2002 Canadian Junior National Time Trial champ and seventh in the '02 Junior Worlds, races as a member of both Team Proco (a regional squad based in Alma, QC) and the Quebec Provincial Team. First-year senior Magen Long, a multi-discipline athlete who is a past/present national champion on both the road and in mountain biking, rides for The Bicycle Store in Oklahoma City; Magen will be concentrating more on the road this year, though she'll still compete in select events on the national mountain bike circuit. And Emma Rickards is a science teacher and former rowing champion from Australia who is in just her third year of serious racing; Emma decided to spend her savings to take a year's sabaticcal and come to North America to race for the spring & summer, with the idea of seeing where the experience leads her cycling career.

As part of the sponsorship deal, Allison, Audrey, Magen, and Emma will be writing monthly journals on racing and a variety of other topics for World Of Difference, and will be featured in a special section of the website that will include biographical information, photographs, and race reports. Funds permitting, they may also do a few select events as a team, including the Wachovia Liberty Classic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
