South Carolina Heritage Series

The 4th and final event of the 2003 Heritage Tour ended last evening in Aiken, South Carolina with Navigators' Henk Vogels taking the win over Chris Horner (Saturn). The 50-mile criterium was covered in 1:40.25 and culminated with the 2 strong men out in front in a 2-up breakaway. 3rd Place, Jacob Erker (Schroeder Iron) finished 30-seconds back. The week of criterium racing moves to Shelby, North Carolina and then back to Georgia for the final 2 events of the week.

Tour of the Gila - Arizona

The fourth stage of the Tour of the Gila was a downtown criterium. A long time favorite of the locals, speaking with them will bring up stories from the 17 years this race has been running; of athletes who are now legends in the sport. With bright blue skies and gusty winds, today's crowds lined the streets, the BBQs were fired up, the beer chilled, and the lawn chairs out to cheer for the over 700 riders who tackle the challenging course at 6,000 feet.

Unlike many criteriums, this one is a humbling experience for many. With a steep, angry little hill on the back side of the course and strong, gusty winds, this criterium is not a typical sprinter's race. With the overall set in the women's race, the only thing up for grabs was a stage win. Race Leader Genevieve Jeanson had won every stage up until today and there were some eagerness in the peloton to ensure she did not sweep the stage race podiums.

From the gun, Saturn threw down the gauntlet, taunting the field with their explosive power on the climb. Under the pressure applied, a group formed with Saturn's Ina Teutenberg, Rona's Melissa Holt and T-Mobile's Sue Haywood. With Holt sitting on, Teutenberg and Haywood made a concerted effort and dragged the break past the ten-second mark. Jeanson got impatient with the situation, despite the fact no one could possibly threaten her nine minute lead of the race, and quickly bridged the gap to the group. With Jeanson there, the field sat up and the time split ballooned to over a minute.

With one lap to go, Jeanson could be seen at the front forcing a high pace. However, Teutenberg and Haywood were expecting an attack and were able to go with it. From there, Haywood countered taking Teutenberg with her. Coming around the final corner it was Haywood in the lead, but with two pedal strokes, the powerful Teutenberg was clear with a substantial gap which she held to the finish. Haywood hung on for second, Holt was third and a weary looking Jeanson was fourth. Behind them another group of three split off the main group, with Katrina Grove driving the pace into the finish for fifth over Karen Bockel (Rona). Manon Jutras was seventh.

The overall classification remains unchanged, and the top two spots will likely stay as they are. Tomorrow's 69 mile race is the reverse loop of Friday's race and should once again prove suitable to Jeanson's climbing prowess.
