Riva Del Garda is a spectacularly set town beside Garda Lake at the foot of the Alps in Italy. Kicking off the Mountain Bike Season in Europe, the Garda Bike Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with record numbers of festival visitors and competitors in the tens of thousands. Garda is also the finishing town for the Marathon culture's much celebrated stage race each year - The Trans Alp Challenge .

Karl Platt and Lesley Tomlinson of Rocky Mountain - Crystal Decisions both attended to contest the Extrema Marathon event. The Marathon format allows the starting competitors to choose to ride the 45km Picollo, 80km Grande or 105km Extrema Marathon distances.There are 3 separate loops combined to make up the longest course. Climbing is a main feature, with 4000 meters of climbing for the longest distance. Killer vistas, not much single track.

World Cup stars Christophe Sauser and Raul Paulissen, along with Karl Platt, led the field of 2500 up the first 20km climb. Sauser and Paulissen finished first and second in the Picollo distance, as Karl pushed on for another 65km. The 2001 Extrema winner, Platt went on to the final climb 40 km later with his closest rivals. Drawing from skills developed in his early days as a downhiller, he secured a 3 minute lead in the 15 kilometre downhill and came home for the win in 4:45. This is a great start to Karl's season, and one of his first big goals of the year.

Lesley Tomlinson had a 5 minute lead on the next challenger at the 60km checkpoint, before missing a turn at the top of the second loop. After an additional 6km off course, she realized the mistake and got back in the race and finished in third place. An already Extreme distance became even more extreme at 112km by the finish. Both Tomlinson and Platt plan to race in preparation for the first Official World Championships Marathon to be held in August at Lugano Switzerland.


Tour of Japan Cancelled

The 2.5 UCI Tour of Japan has been cancelled due to wories about SARS. Among the international teams scheduled to compete was Canadian TT3 Jet Fuel Coffee.


James Worrall Award Winners

The Ontario Cycling Association is pleased to announce that Emily Batty (Brooklin) and Adam Thuss (Stratford) are the cycling recipients of the 2003 James Worrall Awards. They are among a record forty-eight young Ontario athletes who have been selected in this the fourth year of the awards. The awards will be presented in a ceremony at the first Ontario Sport Leadership Conference on Saturday, May 10th by Mr. James Worrall, OC, IOC, in the presence of the Federal Secretary of State for Amateur Sport, the Hon. Paul DeVillers.

Un solide calendrier attend les coureurs cyclistes de vélo de montagne, route, piste, vélo-cross et même de cyclo-cross! Le calendrier de la Fédération québécoise des sports cyclistes compte 358 épreuves sanctionnées en 2003, dont 13 épreuves d'envergure internationale.

La Coupe du monde des femmes de Montréal, aura lieu sur le Mont-Royal le 31 mai. Le Tour du Grand Montréal se tiendra du 2 au 4 juin. La Coupe Canada de vélo de montagne, à Bromont, les 17-18 mai, et au Mont-Tremblant les 7 et 8 juin, sont inscrites au calendrier UCI. Le Grand prix cycliste de Beauce se déroulera du 17 au 22 juin. Le Mont Sainte-Anne acceuillera à nouveau la Coupe du monde de vélo de montagne les 28 et 29 juin. Le Tour de l'Abitibi est de retour du 22 au 27 juillet pour une 35e édition. La Classique Montréal-Québec Louis Garneau fera quant à elle son entrée sur le calendrier international le 10 août.

Chez les maîtres (30 ans et +), le Championnat nord-américain sur route sera tenu à Sutton, du 4 au 6 juillet et celui sur piste aura lieu à Bromont du 11 au 13 juillet. Le Championnat du monde des maîtres en vélo de montagne sera de retour à Bromont du 29 août au 1er septembre.

Du côté handisport, Québec accueillera les 2e Jeux mondiaux IBSA pour aveugles; les épreuves sur route seront disputées à St-Augustin de Desmaures les 9 et 10 août, tandis que les compétitions sur piste iront à Bromont du 5 au 7 août.

Sur le plan canadien, le Québec accueillera le Championnat canadien sur piste à Bromont du 14 au 17 août, et Bromont devrait également recevoir une tranche de la Coupe Canada sur route le 27 août. Enfin, Cap-de-la-Madeleine sera l'hôtesse de deux des six tranches du Championnat de l'et du Canada en vélo-cross les 9 et 10 août.

Les athlètes à surveiller

Geneviève Jeanson, Lyne Bessette, Manon Jutras et Clara Hughes demeurent les grandes vedettes internationales à surveiller. Clara Hughes se consacre maintenant au cyclisme sur piste et complète le superbe trio féminin. Audrey Lemieux du côté des juniors constitue également une des figures à surveiller. Toutes ces athlètes devraient en principe se retrouver au sein de l'équipe canadienne lors des prochains Championnats du monde sur route, à Hamilton, du 7 au 12 octobre prochain.

Chez les hommes, les routiers Charles Dionne, Dominique Perras et Jean-François Laroche, ainsi que les pistards Alexandre Cloutier et Martin Gilbert sont les athlètes de l'heure. Les meilleurs espoirs masculins se nomment Dominique Rollin et François Parisien.

En vélo de montagne, à surveiller les deux principales tètes d'affiche, soit Mathieu Toulouse (cross-country) et Mathieu Laurin (descente), lors des épreuves de la Coupe Canada, de la série Norba et de la Coupe du monde. Ces athlètes représentent les deux meilleurs espoirs en vue des Championnats du Monde. Les espoirs masculins sont Martin Lafontaine, Frédéric Bussières et Jérémy Trudel en cross-country, ainsi que Kwanah Sioui Moar, en descente.

Chez les femmes en cross-country, Marie-Hélène Prémont s'affirmera de nouveau sur le circuit nord-américain, ainsi que lors de l'ensemble des épreuves de la Coupe du monde. À un échelon inférieur, Julie Sanders continuera sa progression en prenant part à l'ensemble des épreuves de la Coupe Canada en 2003. À surveiller finalement Sophie-Anne Blanchette, Elsie Torresan et Mathilde Hupin qui feront leur entrée chez les seniors élite.

Les coureurs de vélo-cross Patrick Dionne, Mélanie Desrochers, Sébastien Pronovost, Jean-François Beaudoin, Kim Lareau, Alex Hébert et Joé Trudeau, seront les principaux coureurs à surveiller en tout au long de la saison en prévision des Championnats canadiens.

The World Tuesday Night Championships 2003 - Vancouver, BC

Starting on May 6th, 2003 at the University of BC, Escape Velocity Cycling Club brings you Vancouver's most hotly contested bicycle racing of the season. From the first Tuesday of May until the last Tuesday in August, the Tuesday Nighters bring the summer alive with affordable and entertaining racing for all levels. From novice racer to World Champion, all cyclists are welcome.

The Course:

The 2002 WTNC season ended a few weeks early, due to UBC's construction efforts around Main Mall and Stadium Rd. For 2003, the WTNC course will use a shortened loop around Thunderbird Stadium until UBC has finished their re-paving of Main Mall. When the construction is finished and the new course is safe to race, we will revert to the popular "long course" used for the past few years. Escape Velocity and Cycling BC has met with UBC Land and Building Services to ensure the continued use of the UBC area for hosting the Tuesday Nighters and we thank them for their support.

First race costs $10 (number + race)
All races after cost $5

All cyclists require a Cycling BC license. If you do not have a Cycling BC license, a day-of-race license can be purchased at the Tuesday Nighters for $15. See Cycling BC's website at www.cycling.bc.ca for more info on licenses.
