The Calgary Bicycle track League is hosting their 2nd Novice (Learn To Ride) course on June 6 & 7.

Course begins on friday evening (6-9 PM), and continues Saturday afternoon (12 - 3 PM).

Cost is $10.00, and includes a rental bike for the two day course + coaching / instruction.

If you are interested in Track Cycling, and would like to learn and experience this exciting cycling discipline first hand - now is your chance.

Donna Sipe was the winner of the Personal Best Time Trial with an improvement of 3:57 minutes over her previous best 16 km. time on the Baldonnel circuit. She had a 34:34. Adam Bilodeau improved by 2:21 with a time of 17:45 in the 8 km distance. Trisha Gladysz's 36:18 won the Mystery Time. There were 38 riders.

Vaughn Hildebrand turned in a scorching hot 24:07 minute time trial for the fastest of the night, under superb weather conditions. Stephen Ferris was second at 24:36 and Mike Hientzman was third at 25:07. Doug Dewar of Prince George was 4th at 25:36 and Richard Howes 5th at 25:49.

Ed Fornelli was 6th at 26:10, Rod Lewis 27:09, Gilbert Bilodeau 27:28, Tammy Howes 27:29 and Erik Snucins 10th at 27:30.

Roger St. Jean was 11th at 27:38, Joseph Gladysz 27:57, Derek Waldron 28:27, Terry Stone 28:30, Ken Nix 28:43, Ross Garbutt 28:53, Brian Maddigan 28:57, Dean Lowry 29:23, Richard Wood 29:28, Al Withers 29:55, Tessa Bilodeau 29:57, Adam Currie 29:58, Owen Giebelhaus 30:03, Tara Wallace 30:07, Gord Harris 30:10, Sam Keats 31:59, Erin Drummond 32:07, Donna Sipe 34:34 and Trisha Gladysz 36:18. One rider had a mechanical and could not finish.

Jolea Bilodeau won the 8 km with 14:17. Dayna Stickel was second with 17:35, Adam Bilodeau 17:45, Landon Howes 17:50, Shelby Waldron 18:35, Cody Withers 18:47, Lois Harris 19:44 and Danielle Howes 21:40.

Stephen Ferris is off to Calgary for the 'Prairie Steamer Stage race' over the weekend. The 120 km Cochrane road race will decide who is going to ride with the Alberta Team for the Tour D'Abitibi.
The rest of the club riders will be in the Tri-Co-op Triathlon in Fort St. John.


6th Annual Tri-Co-op

The 6th Annual Tri-Co-op is happening this weekend (with 73 competitors coming from as far away as Prince George and Grande Prairie. Half the entrants are from out-of-town and the remainder from Fort St. John and area for this 'Sprint Distance Triathlon'. There is a particularly large contingent from Dawson Creek.

Vaughn Hildebrand, Ed Fornelli and Lisa Verbisky will lead the local contingent. Ed and Lisa have done the Penticton Ironman with Vaughn doing his, this August. All are fit and fast.

The triathletes will be swimming one km. in the pool. The under 19 athletes will do shorter distances.

The triathletes will be doing all three events. Relay competitors will each do one leg.

They leave the pool and go to their bikes, nearby, between the tourist booth and the pool. From there they do a circuit ride. They go east on 96th aver and left on 93 street, right on 99 ave, right on 86th street and right on 93 ave. After 7 laps, less for kids, they go back to where they started.

The run starts when they drop off their bikes beside the pool. They travel down the 86 street bypass via 96 ave and 96 streets. Kids are doing shorter distances on a smaller circuit. The finish is on the parking lot in front of the Recreation center.

The event entry closed Saturday, May 24th. Numbers and information packets are available from the Co-op at the Triathlon table.

Come on out and clap and cheer! Race time is at 9:00 am starting from the Pool. Be there for an early sign on and body marking.

TeenSpeed off to a great start in 2003

Victoria's High School Cycling League wrapped up with TeenSpeed races once again sweeping top spots! Robin White and Mike Turner finished 1-2 in the final race of the series, the pair also finished 1-2 in the overall Senior Boys standings with Mike first and Robin a close second. Emily Sandwith, KT Hobor and Sarah van Biert continued to dominate the women's category, finishing 1-2-3 in every race and sweeping the overall standings. The Junior Boys category was also won by TeenSpeed, Matt Savage won all but one race en route to the overall title.

A number of the TeenSpeed racers headed to Vancouver on May 24th for the Provincial School Championship race. Matt Savage won the Juvenile Boys Provincial Championship Race, our first Provincial Title of the 2003 season! In the Junior Boys race it was Christian Ravlic in 4th and Ben Turner in 7th. Robin White finished 8th in the Senior Boys race with Mike Turner a close 9th. Over 500 students participated in the 2003 BC High School Cycling Championships.

On the road, JP Dunlop and Andrew Greydanus continued their quest to make the BC Team for this summers Tour of Abitibi. After strong showings in early selection races they got to come home and race on their "home" course at the Sooke Classic Road Race, May 24. Eager to impress the local fans Andrew sprinted to 4th place in the Senior men's Category 3 race. JP was just back in the pack, taking 10th place. Their results are especially promising considering the category they are racing in is for 19-29 year old men, one step below the Category 1-2/Pro level. Both Andrew and JP are still 17-year-old first year juniors. Steve Morrison will join JP and Andrew in Category 3 after his 3rd place in the Sooke Classic RR and a 2nd place in GC at the Victoria Cycling Festival; Steve has earned his upgrade to Category 3 with a number of strong finishes in the first month of racing.

BC Cup Mountain Bike action, happened in Summerland at the ActionQuest race, the first BC Cup XC on May 18. Emily Sandwith had yet another podium appearance, winning the Junior Women's event. Kristina Vaudry now racing senior had a great first race at a BC Cup, finishing 4th in the Senior Expert women's race. The guys got some good results too with Christian Ravlic finishing 2nd in the Cadet men's race and Matt Hobor, also a new addition to the senior ranks, finished 11th in the Senior Expert men's race.

Back in Victoria, TeenSpeed coach Tracey Temple was honored as a nominee for one of Victoria's prestigious Women Of Distinction Awards at a gala ceremony on May 23. Although she did not win a Woman Of Distinction award (this year) she is a big part of the many successes of TeenSpeed Cycling in the past year. Way to go Tracey!

Next up for TeenSpeed, The Atomic Road Race, BC Cup RR #3, June 1 in Langley and The Bear Mountain Challenge, BC Cup XC #2, June 7 in Mission.
