As this event takes place immediately following track Nationals, it is important that athletes are aware of their responsibilities to qualify (set time standards) prior to July 20.
I would like to see Canada send the MOST COMPETITIVE TEAM POSSIBLE to this year's event. This may mean that some of the athletes haven't been exposed to too much track, as they are actively competing in either road or mountain bike competitions.
To start, and important to note: this will be a cost shared project, and selected athletes will be expected to pay for a share of their trip. Sean O'Donnell is preparing a budget for this trip, and will let me know the exact breakdown early next week. I will forward this to you asap.
The intent of this project is to initiate development of the Canadian Track Cycling program by starting with and targeting our junior athletes, as we build towards the next Olympic games in 2008.
The short term goal is to identify young athletes (juniors) who display talent on the track in any of the disciplines (based on the attached time standards). The medium term goal is to build on this talent base over the next 16 months, and work towards increasing the results and exposure of this young group of athletes (juniors) as we build towards the 2004 Junior Track Worlds (Los Angeles, USA in August of 2004). Medium term goal # 2 is to field a full Canadian team (14 athletes) at the 2005 World Track Cycling Championships (March - 2005 in Los Angeles,California). Long term goal is to establish Canada as an international competitor in track cycling by the start of the 2006 World Cup Season (January 2006).
I need the assistance of every Cycling Coach in Canada to ensure this track program gets off the ground.
My goal is to ensure that every junior age athlete in Canada is aware of the time standards (2003 Junior Worlds Track Time Standards). If you live in a region where you have access to a velodrome, please initiate your athletes to the track and let them try the events and have a go at the time standards attached.
If you don't live in a region with a track, please set up some short time trials on the road. 1) 200 M flying start 2) 500 Meter standing start 3) 1000 Meter Standing start.
Athletes can ride these distances on their road bikes, and then you can send these results to me ! Don't discount your athletes because you don't live near a velodrome!
This initiative requires the support of all stakeholders. Please spread the word, and educate your athletes about track cycling.
Dates of note:
Deadline for all track time standards to be met (July 20) Tour d'Abitibi is targeted as another event from which athletes may be selected. If 1 or 2 athletes from the Tour d'Abitibi show excellent time trial or road race results, there is adequate time to develop these athletes skills further at the Bromont Training Centre during the month of August. Junior track Training Camp in Bromont - August 6 - 13 ( My intent is to stage all selected athletes into Bromont on August 6) 8 day training camp in Bromont , followed by initial 3 days of Track Nationals . Depart for Junior Worlds on August 17 (Sunday), arrival on August 18 into Moscow , with races to begin on Wednesday August 20.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
