IS PASTA REALLY BETTER THAN COFFEE?

Last night's Midweek Race # 7 was the best-attended to date, with 81 riders at the start. Among the newcomers were Saturn's Dede Demet, who's in town for Saturday's Queen's Park Grand Prix, national team member, Leigh Hobson riding for Quebec Tours,high velocity vet. Peter Matuzals from Ottawa and the powerful Ital Pasta boys led by cash man Tim Lefebvre.

As usual the handicap group was off two and a half minutes before the high-powered scratch group. For several laps the pace was electrifying as the 1/2's made very little impression on them. The author can vouch for this as he rode the first couple of laps and clocked speeds of up to 50 kph.

After 6 laps, however, the scratchies started to haul in the rest of the field and by lap 10, all were together and stayed that way until the final lap with many abortive breakaway attempts coming to naught as team work was much in evidence.

As the bunch crossed the line for the final lap, Veteran Don Zuck raced off the front and tried to hold on to a 100 meter lead but in the last two kilometers he was caught and dropped. In a classic lead out move Ital Pasta's Al Worozney and Simon Small towed team-mate Tim Lefebvre to the front and at the finish it was Lefebvre with Jet Fuel's Heath Cockburn astutely using Tim's wheel to grab second. A somewhat surprising third was Hummingbird's David Fry with the Ital Pasta trio of Worozny, Small and Joe Juliano split by Woodstock's blistering vet., Greg Cavanagh
