No Hamilton for Hamilton
CSC's Tyler Hamilton has announced on his website that he will not be coming to the Hamilton Road Worlds, citing the need to recover after his long, injury-riddled season.
Hamilton wrote: "As it stands right now, my racing schedule will come to a close at the beginning of October. The team has me scheduled for about five one day races scattered through Belgium, France and Italy in the second half of September. And, I'm a reserve for the Giro di Lucca, a stage race that stretches into October. I'm hoping I can hold onto my form though then, but it's been a tough year and have put my body through quite a lot.
Taking everything into consideration, it looks as though a trip to the World Championships in Hamilton is out of the question. I have pushed myself to the limit this season under the circumstances, and will need to start focusing on recovering for next year as soon as my schedule wraps up. If you ride yourself completely into the ground it's hard to bounce back 100% for the next season."
Danielson to Fassa Bortolo
As expected, Saturn's Tom Danielson, who impressed the Europeans so much at the Tour de Langkawi this year with his win, has moved on the Division I, signing with the Fassa Bortolo team.

Cheakamus Challenge Partners with Whistler
Whistler, B.C. - Organizers of the 20th annual Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race have joined forces with Whistler Blackcomb, Resort Municipality of Whistler and Tourism Whistler with the goal of building Whistler's original mountain bike race into a resort event.
"This partnership will allow us to keep this legendary event leading-edge by developing event programming, enhancing the marketing program, and solidifying the event infrastructure," says event producer Grant Lamont of Endorphin Enterprises.
"The Cheakamus Challenge is an established and recognized mountain bike race, and we are keen to build on its success over time with events that attract more racers, as well as visitors keen to experience the mountain bike scene in Whistler," said Rob McSkimming of Whistler Blackcomb. "Starting this year, special accommodation and activity offers will be available for both race entrants and spectators."
Now in its twentieth year, the Cheakamus Challenge is one of North America's longest-running cross country mountain bike races. Stretching from Squamish to Whistler, the 71-kilometre-long race will climb 2,070 metres and features a mix of single track, climbs and super fast riding along the stunning Cheakamus River canyon, through old growth forest trails, Whistler Mountain Bike Park and into Whistler Village.
Last year's winners were World Champion Roland Green in the men's field and Nikki Kassels in the women's. This year's race promises to see a range of local and international participants from amateurs to world champions and juniors to masters riders.
The event takes place September 20 with a 10:00 a.m. race start at the Squamish District Airport, and finishes in Whistler Village. Sign-up begins at 8:00 a.m. and entries will be capped at 800 racers. The day will wrap up with the award ceremonies at the Whistler BrewHouse from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Winners will receive cash prizes, value to be determined by the number of entrants. The early bird entry fee is $50.00 and a one-day Cycling B.C. license is available for $5.00. Pre-registration is recommended.

Trophée d'Or - France

La Chapelle Saint-Ursin, France, August 27, 2003 - Australian Alison Wright (Team RRG Nobili) won the sprint to take the first stage of the Trophée d'Or, in the centre region of France. Wright outsprinted France's Magali Le Floc'h (RONA/Esker) and young Byelorussian Volha Hayeva of team Internations 3, one of the three composite teams formed here for this race. The first 18 riders finished in 2 hours, 30 minutes, 32 seconds, at an average speed of 38.105 km/h.
The race was held on a flat course, but the winds damaged the peloton early in the race. The stage was played shortly after mid-race when an attack by Magalie Finot Laivier (Sud Ouest Interégions) and Catherine Marsal (RONA/Esker) eventually created a more than 15-srong break, which included American Heather Albert (Internations 3), German Hanka Kupfernagel, French nationals Sandrine Marcuz-Moreau, Sonia Huguet, Belgian Evy Van Damme, Russian Zoulfia Zabirova (RRG Nobili), last year's winner Tatyana Stiajkina, and Wright, Le Floc'h and Hayeva. Such a group, combining quantity and quality, created a gap that oscillated around two minutes for a while, before exploding when the main field apparently gave up and stopped chasing. They eventually finished 6 minutes and 43 behind the leaders. A brave group of four chasers (RONA/Esker's Melissa Holt, E.S Gervais Lilas' Elisabeth Chevanne Brunel, Orléans-Pays-de-Loire's Elodie Touffet and Belgium's Heidi Van de Vilver battled to the end, and finished 1 minute 33 behind the winner.
Third in the stage and G.C., Hayeva is leading in the under 23 classification, and Australian Oenone Wood took the lead in the Queen-of-the Mountain competition by climbing first the only, very minor, difficulty of the day.
"We're well-positioned in GC", said RONA/Esker's assistant team manager Jim Williams. We have two contenders with the same time as the leader, but we won't have to defend the jersey tomorrow. I think it bodes well for the second stage."

Escape Velocity WTNC Wrap-Up

After an extremely dry summer in Vancouver and with only one event rained out, the Escape Velocity World Tuesday Night Championships have finished up for yet another year. The mid-week racing series at UBC was as hotly contested as ever, with local riders testing their legs on the short, hilly course around Thunderbird Stadium. This year's final standings are now complete. Congrats to all the riders for their efforts and a big thanks to everyone for supporting the BC Junior Team at our Tour de L'Abitibi fundraiser. The two WTNC fundraiser evenings raised $1490 to send the up-and-coming team of Marsh Cooper, Shawn Crump, JP Dunlop, Brad Fairall, Trevor Mahon, and Max Plaxton back to Quebec where they placed 5th overall in the Team Classification and were the first-placed Canadian squad. Escape Velocity would also like to thank Steve Pipkey for being "Mr. Tuesday Nighter" as our intrepid race organizer for yet another year. What an intense weekend of racing at Dagmar Resort for the Bonham & Co. Ontario Cup #5.
Saturday's short track racing had the presence of a World Cup as cameras were capturing every angle for Sportsnet and Bell Expressvu in high definition. Canadian Cyclist will let you know when it will air.
The men's race was extremely aggressive as Gears Racing sent Tim Oliver way out front to set a torrid pace for the event. With three laps remaining Jesse Jakomait of Hardwood, Mike Garrigan and Andrew Watson of Bianchi Canada helped pull in Timmy O. A couple of attacks were launched by Mike and Jesse, however the timing was in Eric Batty's (Bay Cycle) favour as he had the power, speed and determination to break the remaining riders off his wheel and take the win. National Team rider Andrew Watson, and Canada Cup Winner Jesse Jakomait both put in incredible rides to take 2nd and 3rd.
The women's race was less dramatic as Gears Racing's dominance in this field was clear. Riding off the front was Danelle Kabush, Sue Trimble, and Heather King who worked together to put distance between themselves and the other ladies and finished in just that order. Kudos to Stephanie Martinek, Catherine Vipond / Bay Cycle and all the Fly Gurlz for supporting the women's short track and making it a success.
Sunday's x-country racing was a similar order to Saturday's short track so no longer can riders use the excuse that the short track will burn them out for Sunday!
Andrew Watson proved his National Team worthiness by taking the men's win with Eric Batty in 2nd and Jesse Jakomait in 3rd. In the women's race it was a Gears sweep with Sue Trimble taking the win, Danelle 2nd and Heather 3rd. The Junior men's race saw Andrew Erb (Jolley's) besting Mark Batty (Bay), and Ben Dawson (Fitix-McBride) showing that there is a lot of depth in Ontario's Junior men's field!
