The Cat 1/2 race was very competitive with the two Powerhouse Teams, Edgar&Miner/Victoria and Trek/Volkswagen/Vancouver fighting it out for places on the podium. Luca Segato of Edgar&Miner won the Road Race, his teammate Mike Korb the TT, and Veteran Scott Goguen ot Trek/Volkswagen the Å’Downtown Grand Prix' Criterium. In the Crit it was one of those times when a rider (Mike Korb) raised his arms in 'Victory' just a second too soon and got nipped to the line by a competitor (Scott Goguen). Overall victory went to Mike Korb ahead of Mike Flegel of the Comox Valley Cycle Club, with Segato in fourth just ahead of Goguen.

In the womens race we saw the largest field in years, with over thirty riders attending. The quality of riders was high; the quality of racing in the road race low. High class riders like Andrea and Stephanie Hannos, Sandy Espeseth, Barbara Zimich, etc. seemed to be content to ride along with juniors and Cat.4 riders for 80km and let the last 600m uphill section decide the race. Espeseth won this short uphill battle ahead of Andrea Hannos and Leah Goldstein. Andrea was first in the TT, the Crit and GC, with Espeseth second and Goldstein
third in GC.


WHISTLER INTERNATIONAL CLASSIC MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL BACK ON TRACK

The Whistler International Classic will be presented on July 22-26 in Whistler, BC. Rumors had it that the event could be canceled after the announcement a couple of weeks ago of Professional Competition‚s withdrawal from event organization. A newly formed group, T.E.A.M Management, composed of experienced organizers Marika Koenig and Claire Bonin, is undertaking the organization of the event with the support of local organization such as Grinders, the Municipality of Whistler Resort, WORCA and many volunteers.

The Whistler International Classic is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA), the USCF/Norba and Cycling BC. The event will allow the riders to gain valuable international points in the cross-country event as part of the National Team selection process for the World Championships in Mont-Ste-Anne, QC in September. This international event is one of two Canadian stops of the American Mountain Bike Challenge Series (AMBC), a US national sanction series.

The Delta‚s Great Canadian Ride will open Whistler International Classic Mtb Festival on Wednesday July 22. On Thursday July 23, the action moves on to the weekly loonie race organized by Fanatik Co. Friday (July 24) will see the mountain bike riders changing their knobby tire for slick ones, to attack the WORCA fat tire criterium. The cross-country riders will see action on Saturday, while the downhillers will test their ability on Sunday. The Dual competition will begin on Saturday with the qualifier, and the finals will be held on Sunday, immediately after the downhill event. Eight hundreds riders are expected to participate in the Whistler International Classic.

The Classic also offers family oriented events, including the Kids race and the Whistler Valley Tour. Open to cyclist of all ages, the tour will allow the participants to discover some of the greatest trails Whistler has to offer, in a non-competitive environment. The Whistler Valley Tour is scheduled for Saturday and the Kids‚ race on Sunday.

An avid Fredericton cyclist is busy in competition this week, but not on wheels. Mike Eagles is a forward for the Washington Capitals and he is in his first (their first) Stanley Cup finals. Looks like his riding season will start a little later than usual this year.
