Roland Green has pulled out of the Time Trial event at the Road World Championships. The 29 year old from Victoria, BC will be unable to compete after his doctor's have told him to stay off a bike for the next month as he continues to recover from injuries and illnesses that have plagued him throughout the season.

Green, a two time MTB XC World Champion and the defending Commonwealth Games XC Champion, considered the Hamilton Worlds as one of his key objectives for the season.

"I'm obviously very disappointed, but my health is my number one priority. I thought I would be ready to go. I was really looking forward to Worlds, especially with them being in Canada and all. That makes it even harder to miss them." said Green.

National Team Head Coach, Yury Kashirin, echoed the comments from Roland. "The health of our athletes comes before any race or any event that we participate in. Roland needs to take this time and recover and ensure that he can come back strong down the road. With the world championships being in Canada this year, its unfortunate Roland will have to miss out on them. I know this was very important for him."

Jean-Francois Laroche, 23, of Magog, QC, will take the place vacated by Green. Laroche was third at the National Time Trial Championships in June. He followed that up with a 3rd place finish at the B World Championships in Switzerland in July. He represented Canada at the Pan Am Games last month in the Dominican Republic in the Time Trial event, finishing 15th. Most recently at the Tour of Hokkaido in Japan, Laroche finished 2nd in the Prologue and had three other top-5 results in the five stages.

"This is a great opportunity for one of our top young riders to go against the best in the World. It will be a tremendous learning experience for him" said Kashirin on Laroche filling in for Green.

Laroche and 2003 National Time Trial Champion, Eric Wohlberg will race the time trial on October 9, 2003.

Roland Green s’est retiré de la course contre la montre des Championnats du monde sur route. L’athlète âgé de 29 ans de Victoria, CB, ne pourra pas courir après que son docteur lui ait dit de ne pas faire de vélo durant le prochain mois afin de pouvoir continuer de se remettre de ses blessures qui l’ont affectées tout au long de la saison.


Roland Green, deux fois champion du monde de vélo de montagne de Cross Country, et champion défendant Cross Country des Jeux du Commonwealth, considérait les Championnats du monde d’Hamilton comme en tant l’un de ses principaux objectifs de la saison.

"Je suis évidemment très déçu, mais ma santé est ma priorité numéro un. J'ai pensé que je serais prêt pour y aller. J'attendais avec intérêt les championnats du monde, particulièrement parce qu’ils avaient lieu au Canada. Cela est encore plus difficile de les manquer." a dit Green.

L’entraîneur de l’équipe national, Yury Kashirin, a fait écho des commentaires de Roland. “La santé de nos athlètes vient avant n’importe quelle course ou n’importe quel événement auquel nous participons. Roland a besoin de prendre ce temps et de se rétablir afin de s’assurer qu’il peut revenir en pleine forme en bout de route. Comme les championnats du monde sont au Canada cette année, c’est malheureux que Roland doive les manquer. Je sais que c'était très important pour lui."

Jean-François Laroche, 23 ans, de Magog, QC, prendra la place laissée vacante par Green. Jean-François était troisième aux Championnats nationaux contre la montre en juin dernier. Il a répété cela, en juillet, avec une 3ième position aux Championnats du monde “B“ en Suisse. Il a représenté le Canada aux Jeux Pan Américains le mois dernier en République Dominicaine dans l’événement contre la montre finissant le 15ième. Plus récemment, au Tour de Hokkaido au Japon, il a terminé 2ième dans le Prologue et a obtenu trois autres résultats dans les top 5 dans les cinq étapes.

“C’est une grande opportunité pour un de nos meilleurs jeunes coureurs de courir contre les meilleurs au monde. Ce sera une expérience énorme pour lui” a dit Yury Kashirin sur le remplacement de Roland Green par Laroche.

Jean-François Laroche et le champion national contre la montre 2003, Eric Wohlberg, disputeront le contre la montre le 9 octobre 2003.
