Ontario Provincials DH Race Special

Debuts on Nov 6th 8pm on Sportsnet, EST and Nov 16th 5pm on Sportsnet, MT. It will be aired 3 times, in each sportsnet region by Dec 25th, check sportsnet.ca for more airtimes. It will be aired in High Definition TV for those of you Richie Riches who have those TV's. This is an hour show with lots of spills, race footage and behind the scenes look at DH mountain biking.

Winter Race Season Kicks Off at Burnaby Velodrome

(Burnaby, BC) - Over 10 Canadian National Cycling Champions across various age categories and track cycling disciplines will be competing against some of the Northwest's best this weekend in the first event of the Burnaby Velodrome's winter race season. The 2003/2004 BVC Race Series kicks off this Friday night at North America's only indoor velodrome for what promises to be an exciting weekend of track cycling. The 200M track with 47 degree corners will play host to athletes from around the Lower Mainland, across Canada, and from the USA.

Amongst those racing will be 10 time National Champion, World Cup medalist, and Athens 2004 hopeful Mandy Poitras, who will join several Canadian National team members at the event as they begin their quest for a spot on Canada's Olympic team. Poitras, from Langley, specializes in the endurance events on the track, including the Points Race and Scratch Race.

Canadian Junior Points Race champion Marsh Cooper will be testing his legs against a tough elite men's field. The 18 year old from Aldergrove recently represented Canada at the Junior Track World Championships in Moscow, Russia and is eager to do well on his home track.

One of the most exciting athletes to watch and one of the youngest competing will be 15 year old phenom Scott Crump. Crump took home 3 gold medals at the Canadian Nationals in Bromont, Quebec this summer, competing against and beating 17 and 18 year old riders. Coquitlam's Crump managed to qualify for the Junior World Championships in Moscow but could not attend as he was too young - Scott has to wait for another 2 years to turn 17 to race at the Junior World Championships.

Burnaby Velodrome local riders will be up against some stiff competition, with Calgary's triple Canadian National Champion Travis Smith and a host of riders from Alberta, Vancouver Island, as well as racers from Washington and Oregon. US National Team member Tyler Farrar will also be in attendance. Farrar rubbed shoulders with some of track cycling's greats earlier in the year at England's historic Good Friday Track Meet, held at London's Herne Hill velodrome. Farrar placed second in the Points Race ahead of Olympic bronze medalist, former World Jr Pursuit Champion, and professional cyclist Bradley Wiggins.

Racing starts this Friday, November 7th at 7:00 PM and continues all day Saturday November 8 and Sunday November 9 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Spectators are welcome and the weather is guaranteed to be dry and warm inside North America's only indoor velodrome. Crescent Park Cyclocross Series Race # 1 - BC

Date: November 1st, 2003

The first of two cyclocross races to be held Crescent Park was held on a sunny but cold fall day. On each lap of the 2.4 km circuit, the racers were faced with a short run-up, one flat dismount, 400m of pavement and undulating terrain.

The first group off was the Men B. Norm Thibault rode away from the rest of the field early in the race, gaining a comfortable lead that he maintained until the finish.

The next group on the course was the Women. Early in the race there was a tight battle for the podium spots but the selective course eventually took its toll on the racers and Wendy Simms showed her strength, riding away from the competition.

At 10:30 AM, the Men A started a 10-lap race that saw Andrew Kyle attack the rest of the field on the first lap. Olympian Andreas Hestler soon took up the pursuit but could not catch Kyle as he increased his lead every lap, finishing over 2-1/2 minutes ahead of second place. For third place there was a tight sprint that was taken by Basse Clement by less than a wheel length.

Cycling enthusiasts in Craig Bay on Vancouver Island finally have a name - the Craig Bay Chain Gang. The group started over a year ago with Friday trips to local places like Coombs ("Goats on the Roof") and Errington. Since then, the Chain Gang has grown to more than ten cyclists, and now rides three days a week on trips that are usually 50 km to 100 km. This has really built up our endurance for several longer trips. So far in 2003, these include Denman & Hornby Islands, Gabriola Island (103 km); city of Vancouver (100 km); Sunshine Coast (260 km); and Victoria & Sooke (350 km).

Total distance cycled for the last year is just under 6000 km, and we are on target to hit 7000 km for the current year.

The Craig Bay Chain Gang is mostly a retired group of cycling keeners, 60ish, and determined to go like hell for many years to come. We have former triathlon types, marathon and 10K runners, and other very fit individuals who see cycling as a superb means of maintaining that fitness while reducing stress on joints. In our previous lives, we were teachers, firemen, businessmen, doctors, aircraft pilots, engineers, lawyers, farmers, etc. so we have diverse and lively conversations enroute to our favourite muffin and coffee destinations around Vancouver Island. Local merchants have noticed us on many occasions in our brightly coloured outfits and are offering to provide cycling jerseys.
