Canadian Cyclist of the Year Awards

After one week of voting, the standings for the Canadian Cyclist of the Year Awards are as follows (note: we have removed a number of blatant attempts to "stuff" the ballots...):

Men - Michael Barry leads with 35% of ballots cast, with Eric Wohlberg and Ryder Hesjedal in a virtual tie for second at 25%. Junior Max Plaxton trails with 14% of votes cast.

Women - Marie-Helene Premont leads Lyne Bessette at the top, with 27% to Bessette's 25% of the votes, but this one is still close, because Alison Sydor and Genevieve Jeanson aren't that far back, with 21% and 20% respectively.

Ride of the Year - Michael Barry's 7th place at the Road Worlds is a definite favourite here, with a whopping 46% of votes cast. Genevieve Jeanson (Montreal World Cup), Marie-Helene Premont (Grouse World Cup) and Alison Sydor (World Championships) are all tied for second at about 11%.

OCA Staffing Change

For those of you who are familiar with the OCA staff, you will undoubtedly know who Nena Snyder is. In case you don't know who she is, Nena was one of the committed individuals who helped bring the OCA back to stability after some dark times in the late 1990's. Hired in June of 2000, Nena's hard work and attention to detail helped the OCA become the healthy organization it is today.

Nena has decided to pursue other interests and will be leaving the OCA in early December. Any good luck wishes can be forwarded directly to Nena at cycling@ontariocycling.org.

Buy Nothing Critical Mass Roll and Ride - B.C.

On Friday, November 28, 2003, join fellow bicyclists, skaters, and bladers for a leisurely and spirited roll and ride through the streets of Vancouver. Meet rain, shine, or snow at the Vancouver Art Gallery on the Georgia Street side between 5:00 to 5:30 p.m., and roll and ride at 6:00 p.m. Decorated bicycles, trailers, costumes, signs, noisemakers, sound systems, trailers, and wildly modified bicycles are all highly encouraged. This ride celebrates Buy Nothing Day 2003, also on November 28 ( adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd ).

UBC Cyclists: Meet 4:30pm on the South SUB Plaza for a group ride down to the Vancouver Art Gallery.

East Van Cyclists: Meet 4:00pm, leaves 4:30pm, from Grandview park on Commercial Drive for a group ride down to the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Celebrated around the world, Critical Mass is a grassroots reclamation of public space -- on the last Friday of the month -- which allows cyclists and other self-propelled people to move safely and comfortably through city streets in a car-free space. Non-polluting forms of transportation are promoted.
