Retired cycling star Thurau claims doping "unavoidable"
BERLIN - Former German cycling icon Dietrich Thurau has lifted the lid on the doping situation in the sport, claiming cyclists took a variety of substances to enhance their performance on the road.
Thurau, 49, retired from the sport in 1989 but insisted cyclists were always open to doping as they looked to enhance performance.
"We all took everything," Thurau revealed to German newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten. "Fortunately I can say that I always had it under control."
Thurau, who wore the Tour de France yellow jersey for 15 days back in 1977, revealed the strains of a long race made doping an attractive option.
"After seven days you go crazy," added Thurau.
"You are going to be confronted with doping. It is unavoidable."
