Hamilton Report on Worlds
The Hamilton Spectator is reporting that the city paid a total of $424,221 as its portion of hosting the Road Worlds last fall. The actual total was $924,221, including $200,000 in startup money, however, the Worlds organization paid $550,000 to the city for police, fire, ambulance and traffic services. The amount spent by the city was $24,221 over the budgeted $400,000, however, the report by city staff was generally considered to be favourable to the event. Staff time prior to the event, and police overtime was not included in the totals.
The report also gave some attendance and television figures:
- 230,000 spectators
- Canadian television audience 7.8 million
- 900 media from 33 countries
One criticism was the poor promotion of the event outside of the Hamilton area - particularly to Toronto and Toronto media.
