2004 National Calendar Update

We have posted in our Calendars section an updated version of the Canadian national calendar. The major changes from our earlier version are:

• G.P. Laurentides is cancelled.
  
• Gears Racing.com Hardwood Hills Canada Cup will take place on June 6 (rather than June 5-6), and will have a UCI E2 sanction (rather than the previously announced E1).
  
• Road Nationals are confirmed for Kamloops, BC.
  
• Track Nationals are still not confirmed, although we are told a resolution will come very shortly.
  
• North American Masters Road Championships in Sutton, QC may drop off the national calendar.
  
• Mont Ste Anne is confirmed is the site of the Mountain Bike Nationals, with World Cup organizer Gestev as the presenter.
  
• GP Feminin Internationale du Canada moves up to early August from September.
  
• Classique Montreal - Quebec Louis Garneau will drop its UCI sanction.
  
• 'Cross Nationals will be in Dieppe, New Brunswick.

Trust House Tour - New Zealand

Kieran Turner, editor of Cycling New Zealand's website has provided the following story.

It could well be national Canada week at the Trust House Tour. Yesterday they took both stages and today it seemed like groundhog day. Except it wasn't Puxatawny Phil but Eric Wohlberg who everyone was looking to. The race began explosively and within the first 3km a major break had gone. It included three of the Trust House Canada team -Wohlberg, Charles Dionne and Cory Lange, yellow jersey Heath Blackgrove (Samsung NZ), Gordon McCauley (Serio Cafe), Robin Reid (TNL Freighting), Hilton Clark and Joseph Chapman(VIC Cycles), KOM leader Karl Menzies (MGZT) and Jaaron Poad (Team Subway). The hammer went down and before the main field could react the break was quickly out to one minute. The only team with a GC rider not to make the break was Works Infrastructure, although the composition of the break was ideal for several of the other teams, most notably Team Subway.

After 50km the lead had grown to over 5 minutes and with only Works Infrastructure working on the front looked like it would continue to grow. Meanwhile in the break an isolated Heath Blackgrove was fending off the attacks from the Canadians, who were keen to press home there advantage. He eventually succumbed and returned to the bunch where his team began the chase. By this time the gap had grown to over 7 minutes. The pace split the bunch apart but no sooner had the chase began than the steam ran out of it and the main field regrouped.

The chasing resumed with Samsung NZ and Hot Cycles driving the bunch along. However, with 40km to go the steam ran out of the chase and the break continued to extend their lead. Over the last 20km, assured of staying away the riders in the break started to think about the stage. The Canadians's had the numerical advantage and began to use it. However, they couldn't get clear and it was Robin Reid who attacked with 8km to go. He opened up a gap on the group and went for it, holding on to take the stage just seconds ahead of the closing break headed home by Karl Menzies and Eric Wolhberg.

Wohlberg now has 30 seconds over the next two riders on GC, Hilton Clark and his team mate Charles Dionne. There are now 8 riders within a minute of the lead with the rest out of contention 11 minutes 30 seconds or more behind. The main kiwi threats left to the Canadians will be in the form of Robin Reid and Gordon McCauley. The tour will come down to tomorrows, testing hilly stage and Sunday morning's time trial. It will be a battle to see if the Candian team can fend of the challenge from the antipodeans.
