Madison Clinic- Tuesday evening , June 30 in Victoria, BC
A clinic and practice session on madison racing skills, featuring the Assistant National Coach Steve Lund, and National Madison Championship medallist Bob Cameron (Edgar and Miner Carpet One Racing Team), will be offered Tuesday, June 30, at Juan de Fuca velodrome.
Madison racing is the team event in velodrome cycling where teammates relay each other using a sling on the shorts, or by grasping hands.ÂÂ
It is named after Madison Square Gardens in New York, the venue which made this style of racing famous in the 1930's. Canadian's have excelled in madison racing historically, with Victoria brothers Torchy and Doug Peden two of the worlds most winning madison riders in history. Torchy Peden, who was a star in the 1930's and 40's, held the record for the most 6-day wins until the 1970's.
The Greater Victoria Velodrome Association is offering the clinic to prepare all riders for madison events at the provincial and national championships, as well as regular madisons through this and future seasons.
Madison's are an event where endurance athletes from road racing have excelled. "Madison racing is an ideal training opportunity for not only track riders, but for road and mountain bike riders. It develops leg speed, endurance, power, and bike handing skills. I highly recommend it" said Yury Kachirine, Head Coach, National Cycling Centre.
 The clinic will include:
- review of short sling and hand sling techniques
- rules of madison racing
- video analysis of technique
- practice session for relaying in a group
- certification of competency for participation in future GVVA organized madison events
The clinic will be offered in two parts:
 - 5:00 to 7:00 Group B for riders with less developed track bike handling skills. This session will include a separate group for women. - 7:00 to 9:00 Group A for riders with more developed track bike handling skills, including women.
Which group should riders join?
 - Riders may decide which group they will ride with. While there will be riding at speed by the end of the session, bike handling skill rather than horsepower should determine which group is chosen.
- All riders must ride a track bike. Some beginner track bikes are available from the GVVA. Call GVVA track coordinator Tom O'Neill at (250) 478-8384 ext. 2280 to reserve a bike.
To Register:
The clinic fee is $25, $15 for riders under 18. Fee for members of the GVVA is $20, $10 for riders under 18. There is a limit of 30 riders per session. To register, call the GVVA hotline at (250) 478-8384 ext. 2280, and leave a message about which group you would like to register in. Fee payment will be required to hold a spot in the clinic. Proceeds of the clinic will go towards Walton's Wheels, the track bike development fund that is placing track bikes for beginners at the Juan de Fuca Velodrome.
The madison clinic is a joint production of the Edgar and Miner Carpet One Racing Team, The Greater Victoria Velodrome Association, and the Commonwealth Centre for Sport Development National Cycling Centre.
