Correction

In our earlier report concerning Genevieve Jeanson's receiving a racing licence from USA Cycling, we stated that Gord Fraser, Eric Wohlberg and Michael Barry also had U.S. issued licences. This was based on information we had received, but is incorrect, according to USA Cycling. We regret the mistake.


Volunteers Needed

We are looking for Cyclist volunteers interested in participating in our Meals on 2 Wheels at St. Christopher House. The Meals on 2 Wheels program is dependent on volunteers who are willing to use their bicycles to deliver meals to seniors, the disabled, chronically ill, those who have just been released from the hospital, and others who are unable to prepare their own meals with a hot nutritious meal. Get involved in this project!!!

UCI Disciplines Domina Vacanze-Elitron Manager

In its hearing of 27th February 2004, the UCI's Disciplinary Commision imposed upon Vincenzo Santoni, manager of the Domina Vacanze-Elitron trade team, a one-month suspension from 08 April 2004 to 07 May 2004 and sentenced him to a fine amounting to CHF1'000 (1000 Swiss Francs, just over $1000 Canadian) - for incorrect and dishonest behaviour. In fact, in view of obtaining a wild card for the Vuelta a Espana, Vicenzo Santoni had assured the organizer of the presence of Mario Cipollini, without in fact obtaining previously the agreement of the Italian champion. In order to ensure that the trade team Domina Vacanze-Elitron could take part in the Vuelta a Espana, Mario Cipollini was compelled to start in the prologue of this cycling race, abandoning right after due to a poor physical condition


9th and 9th SLC Cycling Team 2004

Logan, Utah (March 2, 2004) - With eyes on the 2004 Athens Olympics, Lin Manufacturing, the premier performance sock maker in the U.S., is sponsoring 9th and 9th SLC Cycling Team, an all-women cycling team. 9th and 9th is a small business district comprised of locally-owned businesses on the corner of 900 East and 900 South in Salt Lake City, Utah. One of the most prominent businesses on the corner is Contender Bicycles. Contender Bicycles along with other 9th and 9th businesses, are proud to be sponsoring the cycling team.

9th and 9th SLC Cycling team roster includes:

- Karen Dodge, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio; Karen's goal this year is to win both the Master's 35-39 U.S. National Road Race and Time Trial.

-Elena Felin, originally from Helsinki, Finland; Elena hopes to make the 2004 Finish Mountain Bike Olympic Team

- Kirsten Kotval, originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; one of Kirsten's goals this year is a top ten finish in the Canadian Nationals Road Race.

-Alison Littlefield, originally from Salt Lake City, Utah; after missing the 2003 season while recovering from back surgery, Alison hopes to return to national level competition. In 2002, she finished as one of the top Americans in the prestigious HP Women's Challenge. Her goal this season in to be top five at the 2004 USA Cycling Olympic Trials Time Trial.

-Becky Stengel, originally from Moab, Utah; Becky's goal this year is to win the U.S. National Espoir Championships in both the road race and time trial.

- Crystal Yap, originally from Boise, Idaho; Crystal has participated in many national and international events. This year she hopes to podium at a National Calender Event and perform well at the 2004 USA Cycling Olympic Trials.

Guest riders this season will include:

-Ina Teutenberg, German Olympic Team Member at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and three-time Junior World Champion, current member of the German National Team

-Jessica Phillips, 2002 U.S. National Road Race Champion, current member of the German-based Team Nurnberger.


U.S. World Cup Track Squad

Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 2, 2004) - USA Cycling announced today the athletes that will represent the United States at the upcoming UCI Track World Cup event in Aguascalientes, Mexico March 12-14.

The trio of Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Adam Duvendeck (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Christian Stahl (Bethany, Conn.) will make up the team sprint contingent along with Marty Nothstein (Orefield, Pa.). Nothstein will also contest the keirin after winning the event in last weekend's World Cup Qualifier in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Massie will also ride in the sprint while Stahl will also compete in the kilometer time trial.

Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colo.) who qualified for both the points race and the scratch race through his performance at the last month's World Cup event in Moscow, will also team up with Jamie Carney (Boulder, Colo.) for the madison, an event they qualified for by virtue of their victory in Fort Lauderdale last weekend.

Rounding out the men's team will be Joseph D'Antoni (Raleigh, N.C.) who will ride the individual pursuit after receiving a discretionary nomination following his victory at the World Cup Qualifier.

Tanya Lindenmuth (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.), Erin Mirabella (Kenosha, Wisc.) and Rebecca Quinn (Quakertown, Pa.) comprise the women's team that will make the trip to Mexico. Lindenmuth, who won the 500m time trial at the World Cup Qualifier will also contest the sprint, keirin and team sprint along with Reed.

Mirabella, who qualified a spot in the individual pursuit at the Moscow World Cup will also ride the points race and scratch race. Quinn, who won the points race at the World Cup Qualifier will also ride the scratch race.

In addition to the team sprint, Reed will also contest the individual sprint following her victory at the World Cup Qualifier and the keirin.

Lopes Breaks Leg

Savannah, GA (March 2, 2004) - Sunday, Feb. 29th started off as another great day for Mountain Bike Champion Brian Lopes, as he was visiting with friends in Savannah, Ga. While participating in some off-road activities aboard a Yamaha "Mule" 4-wheel side by side cart, the vehicle lost traction and rolled over catching his left leg between the ground and the roll cage, braking Lopes' left tibia. Brian suffered an open compound fracture and is currently at the Memorial Hospital of Savannah having surgery to repair the broken tibia. Doctors expect to see him back on his feet in three months.
