dEVo/Powerbar Mar 7 Road Race

These are the results for the dEVo/Powerbar Mar 7 road race held under a steady cold downpour. The course was the (in)famous Armstrong course featuring a 2 km stepped climb on a 7.5 km course.

In the A Group a little over 40 riders started with Scott Goguen and Andrew Pinfold both of Symmetrics riding to an anticlimactic finish as they crossed nearly 4 minutes clear of the field. Goguen attacked near the top of the climb on about the 5th of twelve laps and was joined almost immediately by Pinfold and the duo steadily increased their lead. Will Routley of Symmetrics jumped clear of the main group with one lap to go finishing about 30 seconds ahead of the bunch, which was won by Sean Dawson ( Trek/VW ) over Marsh Cooper of Symmetrics.

In the B group there were a few attacks made up the main climb throughout the 9 laps race but it was not until Dan Schmit ( Bayside ) made a decisive move with a little over 3 laps to go did the real race start to happen. Schmit's lead was healthy at about a minute but the group got time back each lap but came up about 15 seconds short as Schmit soloed for the win. The hard charging group was lead in by Reid Duthie.

B Group

The C group was a little sparse on competitors but those that did race put on a good show. The 6 lap race was slowly whittled down to a select group of 4. At the start of the final lap Marc Bohm ( Coastal ) attacked opening up a small gap. 16 year old Naomi Cooper ( dEVO/Powerbar ) was left to chase as the remaining members of the break were also Coastal riders. In the end Cooper dropped her breakaway companions and outsprinted Bohm at the line.

C Group

Marg Evans won the first race she entered, Sunday. She was first rider across the line in the 'Handicap' Baldonnel road race. Her time was 1:03:00 hours. Dean Lowry was second at 1:06:00 and close behind in third was Gord Harris, 5 seconds later.

Twelve riders did three distances, anywhere from 32 to 16 and 8 km's, all with a staggered start according to each rider's ability and experience. The 80 km winds made cycling particularly tough.

Pat Ferris was 4th at 1:07:00, Ross Garbutt 5th 1:10:00, Matt Jarnagin 6th 1:11:30, Adam Currie 7th 1:11:52, Mike Heintzman 8th at 1:12:53, Stephen Ferris 1 second later, Roger St. Jean 1:15:00, Gary Hilderman 1:16:00 and Wim Kok 1:29:00.

Next race is the first of the three race "Roubaix Cup" series, the Baldonnel Roubaix. The defending co-winners are Stephen Ferris and Dave Damery.

Race time is at 2:00 pm from the Baldonnel School


Subaru/IMBA Seeks New Team

IMBA is looking to hire a full-time, professional two-person team for the highly successful Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew program. Application deadline is March 19, 2004.

This position requires a passion for mountain biking, excellent communication skills, a basic knowledge of trailwork and team compatibility. The Crew will travel nearly all year in a 2004 Subaru Outback. The application deadline is March 19, 2004.

For the last seven years, the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews have traveled the world, sharing their trailbuilding expertise with volunteers, land managers and trail advocates. As a direct result, thousands of miles of appealing, environmentally sustainable trails have been built or revitalized. The crews have contributed to the trails community and mountain biking opportunities in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and several European countries.

Sponsored by Subaru of America and directed by IMBA, the Trail Care Crews work with IMBA-affiliated mountain bike clubs, land managers, and other trail user groups to solve trail management challenges. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews improve trail conditions and trail experiences for everyone.

Now IMBA is looking for the newest team in a long line of dedicated trail professionals. Although the position is not for everyone, couples who enjoy travel and adventure, love to work outside and want to help improve trails and mountain biking are encouraged to apply. IMBA is asking the Crew make a two-year commitment.
