Redlands Classic - California
Preliminary Men's results
Stage 5 - Sunset Road Race 142 km
1 Charles Dionne (Webcor)
2 Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly)
3 Greg Henderson (Health Net)
Final GC
1 Chris Horner (Webcor)
2 Cesar Grajales (Jittery Joe's Coffee)
3 Adam Bergman (Jelly Belly)
Jacob Erker (Team Seasilver), who was in the breakaway, takes the Climber's Jersey after Mike Sayers (Health Net) dropped out after a flat on the first lap.
The break of 13, containing Eric Wohlberg (Sierra Nevada) and Jacob Erker (Team Seasilver), which went on the first lap (of 11) stayed away until the final 15 kilometres, when it was reeled in by the small peloton that remained. Mark McCormack initiated the chase solo, and Webcor and Jelly Belly reacted strongly, signally the end of the break. The stage finished with five laps of yesterday's criterium circuit, which allowed Webcor to set up Charles Dionne for the sprint win - partially making up for yesterday, when a tangle with Gord Fraser in the second to last corner put him on the ground. Dionne wasn't sure about starting after injuring his shoulder in the crash. Horner again led out Dionne and, with one corner to go, Dionne was clear for the victory. Overall, the stage had no effect on the top contenders, although Grajales had a scare with a lap and a half to go. He dropped his chain and had to stop, and then had to chase back on his own, since he had no team mates left in the main group. This is Horner's fourth overall win at Redlands, with four different teams.
