Paris to Ancaster 2004 - Help Wanted

The 2004 edition of the race is now over for the participants, but not yet for us, the organizers. The weather was not the best we have had, but not the worst either and it had a definite impact on the race, the results and your perception of our organization.

First, I would like to offer some background information on the recent history of the race. Many of you know that since 2002, the race has had problems with permits from various land owners on the route. Most of these problems stemmed from a handful of riders behaving badly, but the continuation of the race was in jeopardy. Many, many hours of lobbying, council meetings, and police meetings later, we overcame these obstacles and have developed a positive working relationship with the communities and agencies involved. We are cautiously optimistic that 2005 will be a little smoother on this front and hope to spend more time addressing the concerns of the riders. The need to improve in several areas, (number plates, water stations bus/truck capacity etc) has been noted. It should also be noted that rider behavior in general has also improved, so congratulations to all of you.

While a disproportionate amount of energy has been spent on acquiring the necessary permits for the past few years, the race has still grown in participation. The necessity for wave starts this year was a direct result of this growth, and an attempt to minimize the traffic control problem for police at major road crossings. The good news is that it worked from the police point of view, and we have their support for future editions of the race. The bad news is that access to the Ist wave was not controlled as well as it should have been and some riders entered the 1st wave without authorization, and as a result received times which were 10 minutes faster than they actually raced. In some cases riders were authorized to be in the 1st wave, but the timing chip was programmed for the second wave, resulting in the same 10 minute bonus. We would like to enlist your help in correcting this mistake. If your time seems too good to be true, let us know, you will feel better about it, and the people who rode from the correct wave will feel better too. If you know of someone who has a "too good to be true" time, let us know and we will do our best to investigate and correct any mistakes. Confidentiality will be strictly maintained.

Please send all timing corrections ASAP to tjfarrar@comcast.net before May 5th, so we can publish a final corrected result. Prize money for the 60k will be distributed after the publication of the corrected results.
