Third Race in Comox Cup Road Race Series
By Todd Phillips
The Comox Valley Cycle Club has bicycle road-racing returning to the Comox Valley again this Sunday, May 16th on the Dove Creek Course. Registration will take place beginning at 9am at the intersection of Dove Creek, Burns and Condensory Roads. The racing will begin at 10 am. There will be all the regular categories; with the A Category racing 4 laps (68 km), the B Group racing 3 (51 km), and the C Group and Cadets racing length to be determined at the time of the race. This weekend there are two added bonuses; it will be a qualifying event for the British Columbia Senior Games and there will be a post-race barbeque at Kin Beach Park.
The Senior games are being held this year in Penticton from September 1st to the 4th and Sunday's race is a chance for senior cyclists from Parksville north on the Island and the Sunshine Coast to have a chance in qualifying for these games.
The post-race picnic is to be a Potluck affair with Iain Hay Jr. generously supplying the sausages for the barbeque. Other racers and people associated with the race wishing to take part in the barbeque are encouraged to bring a salad or other such goodies to this event!
The racing this year has been great with many enthusiastic cyclists vying for points toward the Comox Cup Championship. This should create a very competitive environment which would be great for spectators! See you there!
Additional note: :
Our race series has become more competitive this year. We have A, B and C groups. A being competitive, B intermediate and C somewhat slower.
Entry fee for the event is $ 10.00 ($ 5.00 for under 19) and it includes a BBQ and drinks after the race.
Licences are not required but riders must be members of a CBC affiliated club.
The race this Sunday will be held on our Dove Creek Road Course. Coming from Victoria or Nanaimo on the Inland Island Highway you would take the Mount Washington exit but turn right off the Highway onto Dove Creek road (instead of left toward Mount Washington).
Follow this road as it makes numerous bends for about 5 to 6 k and you are at the intersection of Dove Creek and Burns Road. Registration will be right there.
Registration will start at 9:00 racing at 10:00.
