Tour de France
As expected, Lance Armstrong and his US Postal team did not defend the yellow jersey, allowing a break of 5 riders to go clear 12 kilometres into the 200 kilometre stage. The group reached a maximum gap of over 18 minutes, before finally finishing twelve and a half minutes in front of the peloton. Thomas Voeckler (Brioches La Boulangere), the champion of France, gave his small Brioches La Boulangere team an unexpected gift by taking over the yellow jersey after finishing fourth in the sprint, which was won by Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis - Le Credit Par Telephone) ahead of Jakob Piil (Team CSC) and Sandy Casar (Fdjeux.com). Magnus Backstedt (Alessio-Bianchi) was the fifth rider in the break and the stage. Voeckler now leads O'Grady by 3:13 in the overall classification, with Armstrong sixth, 9:35 back.
