Friday: the course passes through the Washington communities of: Bothell, Woodinville, Clearview, Snohomish, Lake Stevens, Arlington, Mount Vernon, Burlington and Bow to Bellingham.

Saturday: the route travels through: Lynden, Pitt Meadows, Fort Langley, Maple Ridge, Haney, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Burnaby to Vancouver.


Rocky Mountain-Business Objects Dominates at TransAlp Challenge

The 2004 Trans Alp Challenge delivered the promise of being the most extreme of the World's marathon stage races. In the 7th year, Trans Alp hosted 560+ teams in the epic 662km, 22,000 plus meters climbing, 8 day stage race from Mittenwald, Germany to Riva del Garda, Italy.

The scope of the race is incredible. The terrain breathtaking .Each day is hosted by a small Alpen town. Imst and Ishgl, Austria, Scoul in Switzerland and Meran, Kaltern, Folgaria, and Riva del Garda in Italy.

The towns open their doors to the immense entourage of riders, support people, friends and the organization. Each day the awards ceremony is a huge production with local dignitaries speaking and presenting the prizes, whilst participants are fed heaps of food to fuel for the upcoming stage.

Defending champions, Gretchen Reeves and Lesley Tomlinson of Rocky Mountain-Business Objects were dominant in the first few days to keep the lead and leaders jerseys for 4 of the 8 days. On the fifth day the lead was taken by the German National Team riders Regina Marunde and Katrin Schwing. Tomlinson and Reeves were consistently on the podium in second place to finish overall in second on the last day.

The same day that Reeves and Tomlinson lost the jersey to the Germans, 2001 Trans Alp Champion, Karl Platt of Rocky Mountain Business Objects took over the first place position for the mens race. Karl Platt showed he had come in to spectacular form with a great top 10 finish at the Marathon World Championships just 1 week prior. Platt rode with team mate Mannie Heymanns of Namibia, South Africa. The pair would battle stiff competition from German Olympian Carsten Bresser and relentless pressure from 2 other German National teams of Sahm and Strobel, and the Czech team of Novotny and Horak. Karl's team kept the lead with two more stage victories to win the overall honours for the grueling tour.

The Trans Alp Challenge attracted over 8,000 hopeful participant applications, with 1000 being chosen to start.

Karl Platt took a creditable 9th place finish at the Marathon World Championships the week before Trans Alp, and on August 7th Platt will team up with his Rocky Mountain-Business Objects team mate Andreas Hestler of Canada for the Trans Rockies race, which covers a similar distance from Fernie to Canmore in the Canadian Rockies . This will be a quest for the Triple Crown for Platt. He has won the Cape Epic of South Africa and now Trans Alp this year. A Trans Rockies victory will certainly identify him as one of the Best Endurance Racers in the World for 2004.
